Two Carmi residents were cited following an accident in rural White County Saturday evening.  State police say 57-year-old Stephen C. Nichaus  was southbound on White County Road 1375E approaching the intersection with White County Road 800N and failed to reduce speed at the intersection, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway, enter a ditch and hit an embankment.  Nichaus and a passenger, 57-year-old Shelly L. Burnett were injured in the crash.  Nichaus was transported to an area hospital for treatment.  Burnett refused treatment at the scene.  Nichaus was cited for DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and not wearing a seat belt.  Burnett was cited for illegal transportation of alcohol, not wearing a seat belt and possession of less than 2.5 grams of cannibis.

Carmi-based Elastec/American Marine is in negotiations with the Cuban government to help them protect the environment in and around Cuba’s waters.  Elastec Marketing Director Linda Henning said the contacts began a little over a year ago when a Cuban delegation visited their booth at a trade show.  Henning says Cuba hopes to explore the waters off its northern coast.  Elastec has acquired a license to export its MiniMax skimmer to the region.

Motorists traveling I-57 near Rend Lake in Franklin County will notice a re-opened rest area in the near future.  The Illinois Department of Transportation says it expects the rest area to reopen in the next week or so.  The northbound rest area, according to reports, suffered water pump problems from people flushing items into the toilets that shouldn’t have been flushed, while the southbound rest area suffered a water main break.  An IDOT operations engineeer said the facilities date back to the 1980s.

Grayville High School’s Homecoming King and Queen were announced Friday night.  This year’s King is Mitchell Malone.  This year’s Queen is Allie Armstrong.

Governor Bruce Rauner signed an Executive Order Friday that rescinded seven Executive Orders signed by Governor Pat Quinn during his final weeks in office.  A spokesman for Governor Rauner said the administration would decide on a case-by-case basis if any of the executive orders should be re-implemented.  No mention was made what the specific orders were that were rescinded.

Fairfield Memorial Hospital will begin holding a Cancer Support Group meeting once a month beginning February 12th on the second Thursday of each month in the hospital’s Medical Arts Complex Community Education Room.  Each meeting will include 15-30 minutes of education from local Oncology Nurse Jessica Turner or a guest speaker on various topics related to dealing with cancer.  Time for questions and group discussion on the featured topic will also be available.

Ted-Cook-obit-photo81-year-old Louisville, IL resident, Ted G. Cook, died Friday, January 16 at Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mt. Vernon, IL.  He operated heavy equipment throughout his life, working for Geneva Construction and Harold Ray, and attended the Flora Assembly of God Church.

Surviving are his wife Joan of Louisville, IL; children, Douglas (Deborah) Cook of Norris City, Carol (Cliff) Anderson of Cisne and Fairfield, Cheryl Trout of Norris City, Steve Cook of Geff and Cindy (William Short) Burt of Fairfield; step-children, Kathy Tester and Valerie Tester both of Louisville, IL, Belinda (Larry) Garner of Soddy-Daisy, TN and Carrie (Tim) McGill of Paxton, IL; 24 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; and a brother-in-law, Don Crawford of Flora.

Funeral services for Ted G. Cook will be at 2 p.m. Monday, January 19 at the Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora.  Interment will be in Orchard Hill Cemetery at Louisville, IL.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. Monday, January 19 until the time of service at the Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora.

Memorials may be made to the family to assist with expenses.

DECAUSEY, JOSHUAA Lawrenceville, Ill. man has been jailed on multiple methamphetamine-related charges following a traffic stop Saturday. Joshua F. DeCausey, 37 has been jailed on preliminary charge of possession with the intent to deliver meth, possession of meth and possession of drug paraphernalia. A Wayne County Sheriff’s deputy pulled DeCausey’s Toyota passenger car over on Ill. Rt. 15 at Wayne County Highway 13 for failure to signal. The Sheriff’s Department K-9 Bolo alerted on DeCausey’s vehicle for the presence of narcotics, police said. A search of the vehicle yielded five baggies containing methamphetamine and $900 cash. Sheriff’s officials said a DeCausey’s three-year-old son with in the car with him. Officials with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services were called to join the investigation. The child, police said, has been turned over to his grandmother pending further investigation. DeCausey remains in the Wayne County jail pending the filing of formal charges and setting of bond.

GREGROY, ANDREWA Wayne City, Ill. teen has been jailed on methamphetamine-related charges following a traffic stop early Sunday morning. Andrew N. Gregory, 19 faces preliminary charges of unlawful possession of meth and drug paraphernalia. County police stopped Gregory’s car at about 1:25 Sunday morning on County Highway 13 for having a broken windshield. A search of Gregory yielded four baggies of suspected meth and a smoking pipe. Gregory has been lodged in the Wayne County jail pending the filing of formal charges and setting of bond.

The new Fairfield Banking Company will open its doors to the public Tuesday. The bank is located at 915 Commerce Drive on the west side of Fairfield. A branch of the Clay City Banking Company, the Fairfield facility has been operating out of temporary headquarters the past two years. Gary Griffith is the local bank manager.

Lincoln Trail College in Robinson is offering a degree program in petroleum drilling technology. Lincoln Trail President Kathryn Harris says the program will help students learn the skills needed to find a job in the fracking industry. Those who complete the program will earn an Associate in Applied Science Degree.

Oil spill response equipment manufactured by Elastec/American marine is being considered by the Cuban government to protect the environment in and around Cuban waters. Based in Carmi, Elastec officials confirm they have acquired a license to export equipment to Cuba.

Grayville High School’s Homecoming King and Queen have been announced. This year’s Homecoming King is Mitchell Malone. The Homecoming Queen is Allie Armstrong. Both were announced Friday night prior to the Grayville vs Cisne boys’ high school basketball game.

loweryNanci L. Lowery 71, of Peoria died on Saturday January 17, 2015 at Heartland Manor Care of Peoria. Nanci worked at Ruppman Marketing in Peoria, retiring in 2004. She was a member of Hilltop Campus Church in Peoria.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth; a son Kip (Julie) Perhay of Peoria, daughter Kim (Bill) bleich of Melvin, step-daughter Sherry (Kevin) Finn of Indiana, sister Marilyn Hysel of Texas, step-sister Pat Wilkite of Creve Coeur, step-mother Dorothy Hysel of Texas, 16 grandchildren and her 2 nieces and 1 nephew.

Funeral services for Nanci L Lowery will 11 a.m. Wednesday January 21, at the Maxwell Road Church of God 905 S. Maxwell Rd. Peoria with burial to follow at Swan Lake Cemetery in Peoria.

Visitation will be 5 – 8 Tuesday, Jan. 20 at the church.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hilltop Campus Church or T.A.P.S animal shelter in Pekin. The Abts Mortuary in Peoria is in charge of all the arrangements.

Marie L. Melton, 84 Winchester, IN, and formerly of Carmi, died on January 18, 2015 at Pine Knoll Nursing Home in Winchester. She retired from AT & T.

She is survived by three sons, Kenneth (Pat) Melton of Lynn, IN, Danny K, (Susan) Melton of Winchester, IN and Dennis Ray Melton of Union City, IN; 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren, three brothers, Robert “Bob” (Gertie Browning) Dodd of Carmi, Jason (Janet) Dodd of Enfield and Harley (Carolyn) Dodd of Haytie, MO; four sisters, Shirley Ann Perez of Carmi, Lynn Stewart of Carmi, Ruby Frances Aldridge of Norris City, and Ruth (George) Chaffin of Carmi.

Graveside services for Marie L. Melton will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday January 22, 2015 at Union Ridge Cemetery near Norris City.

Friends and family are asked to meet at the cemetery. There will be no visitation.

The Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Carmi is in charge of all of the arrangements.

Margrette OliverMargrette Oliver died Saturday, January 17, 2015 at the home of her sister. She worked over 44 years at Airtex Products.  She was a long time active member of King’s Chapel Church.

Survivors include children, Mary Haynes and partner James Hall of Bluford, Gary Oliver of Fairfield, and Larry and wife Karen Oliver of Fairfield, 4 grandsons, 5 great grandchildren, her sister Doris Windland and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Margrette Oliver will be at 11 AM Thursday, Jan. 22 at the Johnson and Vaughn funeral home with burial at Richland Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at Johnson and Vaughn Funeral Home from 5-8 PM, on Wednesday, January 21, 2015.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to King’s Chapel Church.

Fairfield Elks Lodge # 1631 Exalted Ruler, Wayne Shreve presented $500 from the Elks recent Golf Tournament to the Bob Medler Memorial.  Accepting the donation were Mike Pottoroff and Chris Medler.

Illinois residents shouldn’t expect speedy state income tax returns this year. The Illinois Department of Revenue says they will be delayed by new security measures being implemented to deter identity theft and fraud. The refunds could take weeks, instead of days, officials said.

The Edwards County Community Unit School Board voted Monday night to approve issuing $1.5 million in General Obligation Bonds. The bonds are being issued through Edward Jones. The money will be used to complete health-life-safety projects within the district.

25-year-old Jeremy Cottrill of Fairfield was arrested last Friday on charges of burglary and theft. Cottrill is accused of stealing a pair of shoes at the Fairfield Wal-Mart. Authorities allege he walked out of the store wearing a new pair of shoes without paying – leaving his old shoes behind.

The federal trial of a Chicago man accused of mailing threats of beheadings, bombings and other threats to Southern Illinois University has been delayed. The trial has been delayed until 21-year-old Derrick Dawson Burns can undergo a mental evaluation. Proceedings have been postponed until April 6.

Wayne County Golf Course volunteers will conduct their first of four porkburger sales this Saturday on Main Street in front of the courthouse. Additional porkburger sales have been set for February 7, 27 and March 7. Money raised will be used to prepare the course to open for the season.

brentlingerMary Ann (Hardy) Brentlinger, 87, of Flora died Sunday, January 18, 2015.  She attended Cincinnati Bible Seminary for four years. She later worked at the First Christian Church in Flora as a secretary. She also taught in the public schools in Flora for 24 years.
Survivors include her children, John (Jene’) of Flora, Van (Debbie) of Geff, and Ted (Angie) of Geff; grandchildren, J.R. (Nikki) Brentlinger of Freeburg, Jamie (Billy) Lewis of Burnt Prairie, Lindy (Scott) McMillin of Lafayette, Indiana, Lauren (Clinten) Thompson of Grayson, Kentucky, Meghan (Jordan) Obrecht of Geff, and Kristin Brentlinger and friend, Bjorn Fjermedal of Wayne City; six great-grandchildren, Jase and Gentry Brentlinger, Will and Halle Lewis, and Jake and Charli McMillin;  brothers, Bob (Nellie) Hardy of Covington, Indiana, Reva Hawkins of Dix, and Martha (Edward) Ratcliff of Kingman, Indiana.

A celebration service for Mary Ann Brentlinger will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 24, 2015, at First Christian Church of Flora.

Visitation will be from 12 Noon until 2 p.m. at the church.  Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.

The Frank & Bright Funeral Home of Flora is assisting the family.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Cincinnati Christian University, Kentucky Christian University, or Christian Restoration Association.

mcdowellEstel Jeanette McDowell, age 84 of West Salem, IL died on Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at Rest Haven Manor in Albion, IL. Jeanette was a member of the First Christian Church of West Salem. She was also a homemaker.

Survivivors include her husband of more than 63 years, Richard “Dick” McDowell, two sons: Steve McDowell of West Salem, IL, Terry (and wife Gerry) McDowell of Sugar Grove, IL, two sisters: Mary Katherine Diduck and Helen Maxine Lucas, four brothers: Robert Miller, Wayne Howard Miller, Norman Miller and Tom Miller, four grandchildren: Elizabeth, John Allen, Rachel and Rebecca, and four great grandchildren: Aiden, Gavin, Olivia and Connor.

A Celebration of Life Service for Estel Jeanette McDowell will be held at 2PM on Friday, January 23, 2015 at Ingram Funeral Home in West Salem, IL. Burial will follow at Shiloh Cemetery, rural Samsville.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 PM on Thursday, January 22, 2015 at the Ingram Funeral Home in West Salem.

Mike Bassinger Photo45-year-old Dahlgren resident, Michael Scott Bassinger died Monday, Jan. 19 at the Marion VA Community Living Center in Marion, IL. He had been a maintenance worker for the Village of Dahlgren for 18 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during Desert Storm and Desert Shield.

Survivors include his wife Susannah Jane Bassinger; a daughter, Cheynia Paige Hanson of McLeansboro; two sons, Isaiah Daniel and Richard Eli Bassinger; his parents, Dana and Christine Bassinger of Dahlgren; a sister, Dawn Rivas of Fort Pierce, FL; three nephews and two nieces.

Funeral services for Michael Scott Bassinger will be 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 23 at the Harre Funeral Home in Dahlgren with burial in Crisel Cemetery at Dahlgren.

Visitation will be 6 – 8 Thursday evening, Jan. 22 at the Harre Funeral Home in Dahlgren.

Memorials may be made to Michael’s family to the Trust Fund for Richard and Isaiah at Peoples National Bank.   The Harre Funeral Home is in charge of all the arrangements.

uebingerWidely known Flora businessman Jim Uebinger has died. With his family, he operated Uebinger Furniture for many years. He died at his home Tuesday following a brief illness. He was 78. Funeral services for Jim Uebinger are pending at the Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora.

The Centers for Disease Control is reporting a sharp drop in flu activity across Illinois. The latest map from the CDC shows flu activity and similar illnesses as being minimal across Illinois during the first week of the year. Reports of Flu remain high in neighboring states of Missouri and Kentucky.

24-year-old Steven R. Robertson of Fairfield was arrested Tuesday evening on two area warrants. City Police went to the Fairfield Wal-Mart to investigate a report of shoplifting and discovered Robertson was wanted for failure to appear in court on driving suspended charges out of Wayne and Edwards Counties. Total Bond was $400 cash.

45-year-old Tracy Johnston of Bluford was arrested Tuesday afternoon after she allegedly shoplifted an orange dog harness at the Fairfield Super Wal-Mart. She was booked on a charge of theft under $300.

38-year-old Ronald Chapman of Fairfield has been arrested in Grayville on drug and weapons charges. Chapman was booked at the White County Jail on charges of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of between 2.5 and 10 grams of marijuana.

Albion Grade School and High School faculty and staff will be participating in a mock school crisis drill with local law enforcement and first responders this Friday. The crisis drill will be a training exercise for both law enforcement and staff members of the K-12 building. The West Salem Grade School will conduct their annual mock crisis drill at a later date.

Charles “Chuck” Day

75-year-old Thompsonville resident, Charles “Chuck” Day died at 6:34 Monday morning, Jan. 19 at his home. He was a truck driver.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen Louise Day of Thompsonville; three daughters, Penny Blades and husband Randy of Johnston City, IL, Laura Chaffin and husband Jeffrey of Stonefort and Bridget Preslar of Benton, IL; four sons, Timothy Day and wife Bonnie of McLeansboro, David Day of Hawthorne, FL, Michael Day and wife Susan of Mt. Vernon, IL and Patrick Day of Johnston City, IL; 24 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

At this time, there will be no public visitation or funeral services. Mr. Day requested to be cremated and a family memorial service will follow at a later date.

The Harre Funeral Home of McLeansboro is in charge of all the arrangements.

uebingerJames Leroy “Binger” Uebinger, age 78, died at 7:55 p.m. Tuesday, January 20, 2015, at his home. He had owned three Flora-area businesses:  Uebinger’s Shell Service Station, Jim Uebinger Trailer Sales, and Uebinger’s Home Furnishings. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Flora.

Jim is survived by his wife:  Donna Uebinger of Flora; children: Brad Lee Uebinger of Avon, IN, Shari (Jeff) Harvey of Flora, and James Brent (Tammy) Uebinger of Flora; stepfather:  Leo Smith of Flora; brothers: Richard (Golda) Cunningham of North Miami, FL, David (Nancy) Briscoe of Norris City; sisters: Sue (Bing) Lowe of Lockhart, TX, and Marie Browning of Flora; sister-in-law: Ruby Warren of Flora; and brother-in-law: Bob (Marie) Lee of Ellerslie, GA; 4 grandchildren: Brandi (Danny) Brown of Seattle, WA, Trenton Harvey of Austin, TX, Shannon (John) Hurliman of Bloomington, Rylee Uebinger of Flora, and Elizabeth Williams of Flora; 5 great-grandchildren with a 6th one “on the way”;  and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Jim Uebinger will be 12 noon Saturday, Jan. 24 at the Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora with burial in the Floral Garden of Memories Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the hour of service on Saturday at the Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests giving to a college fund for Rylee Uebinger or First Baptist Church of Flora.

18-year-old Eddie D. Brooks of Fairfield was arrested Wednesday night on a felony charge of trespass to a residence. Lisa M. Gifford of George Street in Fairfield awoke Wednesday night to find Brooks sitting on her living room sofa wearing no shirt or shoes. Giffford’s husband escorted him out of the house. Police later arrested Brooks at his own home on Laurel Street. Officers said Brooks was “extremely intoxicated”. He also faces a charge of underage drinking.

brownA candlelight vigil will be held Friday night for a Harrisburg man who has been missing since December 28. Kyle Brown (pictured) was last seen in the early morning hours of Dec. 28. His mother says he was showing signs of mental illness at the time of his disappearance. The vigil will start at 6 p.m. at the Bonan Business Center in Harrisburg.

Gov. Bruce Rauner escaped injury Wednesday when his motorcade SUV was struck by a vehicle involved in another crash. The accident happened on Michigan Avenue in Chicago. Members of the governor’s security detail were also in the vehicle with Rauner. All escaped injury.

Raymond James welcomes Christopher Conard as a new Financial Advisor. Conard Financial Group is located at 601 West Delaware in Fairfield. He will be assisted by Kristie Weaver, Senior Office Administrator and Kathy Bircket, Branch Office Administrator.

The NCOE FFA Alumni will stage their first ever fundraising event this Saturday at Booth School in Enfield. A benefit auction will be conducted by Jamie Scherrer. Money raised will be used to keep the school’s agriculture program functioning. Doors will open Saturday night at 5:30.

Survivors include four sons; George (Brenda) Felty of Mt. Vernon, IL, Darrel (Carolyn) Felty of Normal, IL, Donivan (Paula) Felty of San Angelo, TX and Keith Felty of Elkville, IL; a daughter, Rita Felty of Energy, IL; a brother, Ron (Beverly) Walter of Oklahoma City, OK; a sister, Gayla Blackford of Fairfield; six grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Imogene M. Felty will be 12 noon Saturday, Jan. 24 at Nale’s Funeral Home in Fairfield with burial in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24 until the time of service at Nale’s Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Memorials may be made to the Mill Shoals Gospel Assembly Church and will be accepted at Nale’s Funeral Home in Fairfield.
