Two Carmi residents were cited following an accident in rural White County Saturday evening. State police say 57-year-old Stephen C. Nichaus was southbound on White County Road 1375E approaching the intersection with White County Road 800N and failed to reduce speed at the intersection, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway, enter a ditch and hit an embankment. Nichaus and a passenger, 57-year-old Shelly L. Burnett were injured in the crash. Nichaus was transported to an area hospital for treatment. Burnett refused treatment at the scene. Nichaus was cited for DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and not wearing a seat belt. Burnett was cited for illegal transportation of alcohol, not wearing a seat belt and possession of less than 2.5 grams of cannibis.
Carmi-based Elastec/American Marine is in negotiations with the Cuban government to help them protect the environment in and around Cuba’s waters. Elastec Marketing Director Linda Henning said the contacts began a little over a year ago when a Cuban delegation visited their booth at a trade show. Henning says Cuba hopes to explore the waters off its northern coast. Elastec has acquired a license to export its MiniMax skimmer to the region.
Motorists traveling I-57 near Rend Lake in Franklin County will notice a re-opened rest area in the near future. The Illinois Department of Transportation says it expects the rest area to reopen in the next week or so. The northbound rest area, according to reports, suffered water pump problems from people flushing items into the toilets that shouldn’t have been flushed, while the southbound rest area suffered a water main break. An IDOT operations engineeer said the facilities date back to the 1980s.

Governor Bruce Rauner signed an Executive Order Friday that rescinded seven Executive Orders signed by Governor Pat Quinn during his final weeks in office. A spokesman for Governor Rauner said the administration would decide on a case-by-case basis if any of the executive orders should be re-implemented. No mention was made what the specific orders were that were rescinded.
Fairfield Memorial Hospital will begin holding a Cancer Support Group meeting once a month beginning February 12th on the second Thursday of each month in the hospital’s Medical Arts Complex Community Education Room. Each meeting will include 15-30 minutes of education from local Oncology Nurse Jessica Turner or a guest speaker on various topics related to dealing with cancer. Time for questions and group discussion on the featured topic will also be available.
