Newly elected Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner has ordered all state agencies to freeze non-essential spending. He has also asked all state agencies to review all contracts signed since November 1. Rauner has also cut his own salary to $1 and is declining any benefits. More executive orders are expected to be issued today.

Formal charges have been filed against a Fairfield man in a New Year’s Eve domestic battery case. 26-year-old Jesse M. Moore is accused of battering his 27-year-old pregnant wife, Amanda R. Moore and a child under the age of 13. Jesse Moore faces three counts of aggravated battery.

Mike St. Ledger has retired from the Fairfield Memorial Hospital Association board after 20 years of service. Anita Pond has been selected to serve a three year term as his successor. Sandy Simpson and Jared Vaughan have been re-elected to serve an additional three year terms. Officers elected include Dr. Patrick Molt as President, Dale Warren as Vice President and Martha Heflin as Secretary/Treasurer.

Fairfield is getting a new business. L.J. Liquidations opens this Thursday in Westport Plaza, next to TT Nails. L.J. Liquidations is a consignment and wholesale business selling a variety of new and used items.

The Fairfield Community High School Varsity Scholastic Team captured first place Monday night in the inaugural Black Diamond Invitational Scholastic Bowl Tournament. FCHS went 4 -0 on the evening, defeating Hamilton County, Goreville, Edwards County and Johnston City.

Jane Feller90-year-old Fairfield resident, Jane Feller died at 5:14 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10 at Fairfield Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Room. A member of the DAR, she was a homemaker.

Survivors include a daughter, Shirley (Dennis) Conard of Flora; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Crain of Murphysboro; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Graveside services for Jane Feller will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17 at Maple Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. until the time of service at the Johnson & Vaughn Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Memorials may be made to the Way-Fair Activity Fund or the Fairfield Public Library and will be accepted at the Johnson & Vaughn Funeral Home in Fairfield, which is in charge of all the arrangements.

Jon Land photo76-year-old Marion, IL resident, Jon W. Land died at 12:45 p.m. Monday, Jan. 12 at St. Clare’s Hospital in Alton, IL. He had been a service clerk for Fabick Tractor Company in Marion, IL for over 25 years.

Survivors include his wife, Marsha Lynn Land of Marion, IL; four nephews and one niece.

Funeral services for Jon W. Land will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15 at Nale’s Funeral Home in Fairfield with burial in Maple Hill Cemetery with military rites provided by the Anthony Wayne Post 176 American Legion and Wayne Memorial Post 4535 VFW.

Visitation will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 15 until the time of service at Nale’s Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Memorials may be made to the Marion Independent Baptist Church and will be accepted at Nale’s Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Jarad Blanton has been sworn in as Fairfield’s newest full time firefighter. Blanton has completed all of the required testing and was recommended for hiring. City Fire Chief Darin Hopper and former Chief Terry Weedman presided over the ceremonies during Tuesday night’s Fairfield City Council meeting. Blanton is replacing Chris Wise who left the department after failing to comply with the city’s residency requirements.

The Fairfield Fire Department has revised its first responder plan. Under the new rules, only those who are certified first responders can respond to emergencies. The department’s certified first responders include four full time firemen and six paid on call firemen.

A trial date has been set for a White County man accused of aggravated drunk driving in the death of a Carmi teen a year ago. A Sept. 15 trial date has been set for 21-year-old Camron Gunter of Carmi. Gunter faces aggravated drunk driving charges in connection with the January 7, 2014 accident that caused the death of 18-year-old Gregory W. Dillman of Carmi.

A Paducah, KY man has entered a guilty plea to charges he used Facebook to lure a White County teen into a sexual encounter. 20-year-old David Tyler Stover will be sentenced March 9 on a class-4 felony charge of grooming. The Norris City Police Department investigated the case.

rogersMusic legend Kenny Rogers will be the featured entertainment at this year’s Illinois Oil and Gas Association’s Convention and Trade Show. The 69th annual meeting has been set for March 5th and 6th at the Old National Events Plaza in Evansville. Rogers will perform on Thursday evening, March 5.

John PetersonJohn Lawrence Peterson, 92, passed away at 11:00 pm. Wednesday, December 24, 2014, at Way-Fair Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Fairfield, Il. He was a World War II veteran, serving as an Air Force pilot trainer. He was a petroleum engineer and worked 41 years for Texaco Oil Company.  He attended Kansas State University where he earned his BS in engineering.  He enjoyed playing bridge, was an active member of Fairfield Tennis Club and Southern Illinois Tennis Association.

He is survived by two sons, Larry (Kathy) Peterson of Taylorville, IL and Alan (Jan) Peterson of Springfield, IL; three daughters, Jan (Chuck) Briscoe of Cincinnati, OH, Kristen Wilson of The Villages, FL, and Erica Peterson of St. Louis, MO, and nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Saturday, January 17, from 1-3pm with a memorial service following at Johnson and Vaughn Funeral Home in Fairfield, and internment at Maple Hill Cemetery.

The Johnson and Vaughn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

The City of Fairfield has been awarded a $250,000 Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity grant for renovations at the Fairfield City Police station located on Leininger Rd. The money will be used to make the structure handicap accessible. The project will include renovations to the lobby, and ADA compliant restroom, parking improvements and a drive-up handicapped accessible drop box for City of Fairfield utility payments.

Currier V of Golden Gate has been sentenced to 13 years in prison after pleading guilty to charges he stabbed a man in Grayville last August and escaped from the White County jail last October. White County State’s Attorney Denton Aud says Currier was sentenced to 8 years in the stabbing case and a consecutive 5 years for the jail break. In pleading guilty, Currier admitted that he stabbed Dustin “Stitch” Robson in the abdomen during the Grayville Days celebration.

Following a six day jury trial, an Allendale man has been found guilty of a class-X felony charge of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child under the age of 13. 78-year-old Wayne A. Welton will be sentenced on February 24 in Wabash County circuit Court.

Andrew Williams has been hired as a Financial Advisor at the Edward Jones office at 302 West Main Street in Fairfield. He replaces Christopher Conard who left the business last month.

25-year-old Clarence W. Hutchinson and 22-year-old Ricky L. Hutson of Wayne City were arrested Wednesday in Mount Carmel. Hutchinson was cited for driving on a suspended license and speeding. Hutson was cited for being in possession of drug paraphernalia.

The Wayne County Farm Bureau Foundation is offering six $500 scholarships to Wayne County youth who plan to major in an ag-related field of study for the fall 2015 semester. More information is available at the Farm Bureau office in Fairfield.

66-year-old Albion resident, Sharon K. Copley died at 5:05 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13 at her home. She had been a radiology technician.

Survivors include her husband, Allen Cunningham of Albion; a son, Cody (Jolequyn) Abby of Albion; a daughter, Stacey (Paul) Malak of Wildwood, MO; two sisters, Bonita (Mike) McCurdy of Albion and Trish (Jeff) Hale of Albion and three grandchildren.

Funeral services for Sharon K. Copley will be 1 p.m. Saturday, January 17 at the Little Prairie Christian Church.

Visitation will be noon until the time of service Saturday, January 17 at the Little Prairie Christian Church.

schnickerA Dahlgren man has been sentenced on charges he texted lewd photos of himself to a 13-year-old girl. Jerry E. Schnicker, 40 has been placed on 18 months of probation. He has also been ordered to pay a $6,500 fine and register as a sex offender for ten years. The case dates back to December of 2012 when Illinois State Police detectives learned Schnicker had been communicating with a 13-year-old girl via text messages, exchanging lewd photos of each other.

Winning the Jasper Grade School Spelling Bee Thursday was 8th grader Josh Combs, the son of Steve and Michelle Combs. He was a repeat winner from last year. Runner-up was McKenna Carter, a 6th grader and the daughter of Harry and Kim Carter. Both will compete in the Wayne County Spelling Bee on Feb. 4 at City Hall. Pictured left to right are McKenna Carter, Kathy Land and Josh Combs. Kathy Land has been Jasper School’s Spelling Bee Coordinator for 22 years. She is retiring this May.

She spoke about a Functional Needs Registry for Wayne County. A functional need is any need before, during and after an incident where individuals need assistance with maintaining independence, communication, transportation, supervision or medical care. A benefit dinner for Gary Griffith has been set for this Sunday at the Wayne County fairgrounds in Fairfield. Gary has spent over 3 months at a St. Louis hospital after receiving a double lung transplant. Serving of BBQ and chicken will start at 11. The cost is by donation.

Fay  Morris Photo88-year-old Dahlgren resident, Fay Morris, died at 11:57 p.m. Thursday, January 15 at her home.  She was a homemaker, member of the First United Methodist Church in McLeansboro.  She loved to garden and was an original member of the Hamilton County Home Extension Unit.

Surviving are two daughters, Flossie Webb and husband Ron of Wayne City and Dorothy Smith and friend Rob Schuster of McLeansboro; one son, Wayne Morris and wife Donna of Dahlgren; five grandchildren, Marty Webb (Alicia) of McLeansboro, Ryan Webb (Heather) of Chilicothe, IL, Diane Todd (Jay)  of Johnston City, IL, Dwayne Smith (Adrea) of Wayne City and Lyndi Davis (Kelton) of Waterloo, IL; 11 great-grandchildren, Brandon, Landon, Garrett, Tinlea, Darwin, Annalea, Austin, Hayden, Wendell, Quincy and Elizabeth; one sister, Opal Hall of Wayne City; a sister-in-law, Eula Faye Erkmann of Nixa, MO; and a brother-in-law, Joe Morris and wife Mary Ann of McLeansboro.

Funeral services for Fay Morris will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 20 at the Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro.  Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery at McLeansboro.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday, January 19 at the Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro.

Headlines for Saturday, January 17, 2015

murphy29-year-old Joseph M. Murphy of Grayville was charged Friday with three counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse in Edwards County Circuit Court.   Murphy (pictured left) is accused of having sexual contact with a 13-year-old on or about January 7th.  Bond on Murphy was set at $15,000 cash. Illinois State Police detectives investigated the case.

Grayville High School’s Homecoming King and Queen were announced Friday night.  This year’s Homecoming King is Mitchell Malone.  The Homecoming Queen is Allie Armstrong.  Both were announced prior to Friday night’s Graville vs. Cisne high school basketball game.

A state police accident reconstructionist is investigating a two-vehicle accident that occurred in Richland County Friday morning and injured both drivers.  Police said for unknown reasons, the driver of a 2001 Ford Ranger pickup truck that was travelling north on Illinois Route 130 about two miles north of Olney collided head-on with a 2002 Chevy S-10 pickup truck that was southbound on Route 130.  Police said both drivers were airlifted from the scene to area hospitals for treatment, but did not identify those involved.

Gage Crabtree of Orchardville has accepted an apprentice lineman position with Duke Energy based out of Columbus, IN beginning this Monday.  Crabtree will be working with the transmission crew reconstructing transmission lines in the Southern Indiana territory, and after four years of working and training as an apprentice lineman, will become a journeyman lineman.  Crabtree is a 2009 graduate of Wayne City High School and completed the Electrical Distribution Systems Program in May 2014 at Frontier Community College in Fairfield.

A benefit dinner for Gary Griffith will be held Sunday starting at 11 a.m. at the Wayne County Fairgrounds in Fairfield.  The cost of the chicken and barbecue dinner will be by donation.  Griffith has spent over three months in a St. Louis, MO hospital after receiving a double lung transplant.

JB Courtright81-year-old Geff resident, James Burvill (JB) Courtright, died  Friday, January 16 at his home.  He was a farmer and worked for FS, Anaconda, Southwire and Airtex.  He was a member of the Enterprise United Methodist Church and served as a board member for the Cisne Grade School and North Wayne Fire Department.

Surviving are his wife Darline of Geff; one son, Rev. James Gregory (Pamela) Courtright of Monticello, IL; a daughter-in-law, Debra Courtright of Blytheville, AR; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Janet (JW) Pyle of Winder, GA and Gladys (Karel) Smith of Decautr, IL; two brothers, Gary (Dorothy) Courtright of Waters, MI and Lewis (Vicki) Courtright of Cisne; a sister-in-law, Deloris Atteberry of Cisne; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for James Burvill (JB) Courtright will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 20 at the Hosselton Funeral Home in Cisne.  Burial will be in Cisne Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Monday, January 19 at the Hosselton Funeral Home in Cisne.

Memorials may be made to Enterprise United Methodist Church, and will be accepted at the Hosselton Funeral Home in Cisne.

78-year-old Frances Simmons Bell died at 5:50 p.m. Thursday, January 15 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, IN.  She had worked in Fairfield Memorial Hospital Housekeeping.

Surviving are her husband Ivan of Fairfield; three sons, Jackie Simmons of Eldorado, Steven Troy Simmons of Chicago and Robert Simmons of Fairfield; three step-daughters, Pamela Simpson, Kimberly Rodgers and Cathy Clevenger all of Fairfield;  nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one sister, Lucritia Isle of Fairfield; and three brothers, Earl Smith, Verl Smith and Norvel Smith all of Fairfield.

The body is to be cremated, and a Memorial Service for Frances Simmons Bell will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 24 at the Johnson & Vaughn Funeral Home in Fairfield.  There will be no visitation.

Memorials may be made to the King’s Chapel Church and will be accepted at the Johnson & Vaughn Funeral Home in Fairfield which is in charge of all of the arrangements.

71-year-old former Mill Shoals resident, Frances C. Lister of Clay City, IL died at 3:23 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon. She had been a cook for various restaurants.

Survivors include a son, Tracy Vaughan of Dix, IL; two daughters, Marilyn Rahn and Amanda Vaughan, both of Dix; a brother, Floyd Leroy Robertson of Williamsville, MO; two sisters, Donna Luke and Tina Marie Vaughan, both of Williamsville, MO; 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

The body is to be cremated with services to be held at a later date.

Nale’s Funeral Home in Fairfield is in charge of all the arrangements.
