Shannon WoodrowThe former Mill Shoals Township Clerk is back in jail. Shannon L. Woodrow, 42 of Springerton has been lodged in the White County jail at Carmi on two warrants out of Wayne County for failure to appear, and other warrants out of Hamilton and Jefferson Counties. In Wayne County, Woodrow was wanted for failure to appear in court on a 2014 DUI-Drugs or Alcohol charge. Bond is $150 cash. In Hamilton County she was wanted on warrant for bad checks. Bond in the Hamilton County case is $500 cash. It is not known at this time what the warrant was for out of Jefferson County.

Kristin Betz, FNPHamilton Memorial Hospital McLeansboro Family Clinic welcomes Kristin Betz, FNP. Kristin is a board certified family nurse practitioner. She earned her nursing degree from McKendree University in Lebanon, Illinois and continued her education with a nurse practitioner degree from Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Kristin’s practice will include a full-range of family medicine including well-women exams and women’s health care, DOT physicals, illness and infection treatment in all ages, chronic disease management, and physicals. The McLeansboro Family Clinic also offers extended hours Monday through Friday until 6pm and welcomes walk-ins.

The City of Fairfield Board of Fire and Police Commissioners are seeking applicants to establish an eligibility list from which police officers and firefighter vacancies will be filled. Application packets are available at city hall. A mandatory orientation meeting for applicants has been set for June 19 at city hall.

The victims of a head-on crash in Albion Sunday have been identified. Killed in the crash were Leah Koester, 57 of Teutopolis and George H. Thomas, 65 of Noble. The accident happened on Ill. Rt. 130 near Albion Equipment Company. One of the victims died at the hospital in Mt. Carmel. The other died at an Evansville hospital.

Illinois State Police have released the name of a Southern Illinois man killed Friday night in a motorcycle crash in Franklin County. 36-year-old Mark Holtz died when his Harley Davidson ran off the Orient Road and crashed in a ditch. Police say he was traveling at a high rate of speed.

Peach orchard owners in Southern Illinois say they are worried about an infestation of stink bugs. The bugs are native to East Asia, and are known for eating fruits like apples and peaches. Growers are encouraged to scout their orchards regularly for the pests.

Signup is underway for the 15th annual Kids In Motion Summer Day Camp in Fairfield. The camp opens June 1 and runs through august 7. The camp is for kids entering kindergarten through 8th grade. The program offers structured daily activities and nutrition. More information is available from director Becky Hinkle at 897-2398.

Clarena Simms79-year-old former Fairfield resident, Clarena Simms died at 4:39 a.m. Monday, May 25 at Gibson General Hospital in Princeton, IN. A member of the Fairfield Cumberland Presbyterian Church, she sold Mary Kay for 30 years.

Survivors include her husband, Joey Simms of Princeton, IN; sons, Bradley (Beth) Simms of Haubstadt, IN and Brent (Cindy) Simms of Fairfield; a brother, Harlan (Ruthie) Payton of Mt. Pleasant, MI; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services for Clarena Simms will be 1 p.m. Thursday, May 28 at the Fairfield Cumberland Presbyterian Church with burial in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be 11 a.m. Thursday until the time of service at the Fairfield Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Memorials may be made to the Fairfield Cumberland Presbyterian Church and will be accepted at the Johnson & Vaughn Funeral Home in Fairfield, which is in charge of all the arrangements.

Anita Roeder61-year-old Fairfield resident, Anita Ruth Roeder died at 8:15 Monday morning, May 25 at her home. She had worked in Patient Care at Fairfield Memorial Hospital, Way-Fair and Home Health.

Survivors include her step-mother, Barbara Smith of Keenes; her husband of 37 years, Leroy Roeder of Fairfield; a daughter, Crystal (Arnold) Beck of Princeton, IN; half-brothers, David, Dennis, Todd and Kelly Smith; and three grandsons, Taylor, Trevor and Dalton Beck, all of Princeton, IN.

Services for Anita Ruth Roeder will be 2 p.m. Friday, May 29 at the Johnson & Vaughn Funeral Home in Fairfield with burial in Koontz Cemetery.

Visitation will be 5 – 7 Thursday evening, May 28 at the Johnson & Vaughn Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Memorials may be made to the ASPCA and will be accepted at the Johnson & Vaughn Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Steve Ahlfield obit pictureSteve Samuel Ahlfield, 65 of West Salem died Monday, May 25 at Richland Memorial Hospital in Olney. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he worked various jobs in the oilfields, retiring in 2011. He was a lifetime member of the VFW.

Survivors include his wife Victoria (Moyes) Ahlfield of West Salem, IL, three sisters; Marsha (Ahlfield) Huddleston of Lawrenceville, IL, Esther (Ahlfield) Shilling of West Salem, IL, Karen (Ahlfield) Grant of Albion, IL, one brother; Mark Ahlfield of West Salem, IL, Four sons; Bill Ahlfield of Ottawa, IL, Joe Ahlfield of Streeter, IL, Brody Ahlfield of Ottawa, IL, Garrett Ahlfield of West Salem, IL, Eight daughters; Ericka Jones of West Salem, IL, Jennifer Ahlfield of Streeter IL, Stefanie Ahlfield of Herin, IL, Anna Buchanan of Mt. Carmel, IL, Angie Cunningham of Lawrenceville, IL, Amy Hedrick of Ozark, IL, Amber Ahlfield of West Salem, IL, Gwendaline Ahlfield of West Salem, IL, and Amy Chamness foster daughter of Gardner, IL. Steve is also survived by 20 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services for steve Samuel Ahlfield will be 10 a.m. Thursday, May 28 at Marion Christian Church Cemetery with military rites.

The Ingram Funeral Home of West Salem is in charge of all the arrangements.

Ruth KnavelRuth French Knavel, 90, of Fairfield, Illinois died on Monday, May 25 at St. Mary’s Hospital Evansville. She was a graduate of Fairfield Community High School in 1943 and Attended Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois.  She worked at Fairfield Memorial Hospital and was an active teacher’s aide at F. C. H. S. until she retired. After retiring she fulfilled her lifelong dream and became a missionary in 1986. Ruth’s missionary travel’s included China, Korea and Mexico until 2002.

Survivors include four children and their families, Susan Marie Knavel (Holland) of Evansville, Indiana, Steven Howard Knavel of Anna, Illinois, Christopher Charles Knavel of Belleville, Illinois and Lisa Knavel of Fairfield, Illinois; seven grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Ruth French Knavel will be 2 p.m. Saturday, May 30, at the First Christian Church in Fairfield with burial in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be noon until service time at the church.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to help with funeral expenses and will be accepted at the Johnson & Vaughn Funeral Home in Fairfield, which is in charge of all the arrangements.

Robin “Rob” Watson, 50, of Indianapolis died Friday, May 22. He graduated from Zionsville High School.

Survivors include his father Harlan Watson and stepmother Joan Watson and sister Kimberly Hokanson.

Graveside services will be held at Cisne Cemetery in Illinois on Monday, June 1, 2015 at 1:00 pm. Arrangements: Indiana Funeral Care and Crematory.

BULLETIN  – 

Officials with Airtex Products in Fairfield, Ill. have announced plans to move the bulk of the company’s production jobs to plants in Mexico and China. The move, expected to be begin in September will take six to twelve months to complete. The move will leave 75 jobs behind, mostly in the distribution department and some support staff positions.  The Fairfield facility manufactures fuel pumps for the automotive industry.“It’s a very tough situation,” said Keith Zar, Vice President of UCI-Fram, the parent company of Airtex. “But this is a very tough market. The bulk of operations will be moved out of Fairfield, starting in September.”   Airtex is Fairfield’s largest employer. Employment at the Fairfield plant currently stands at 350. The announced reduction follows the layoff of 160 workers in late 2013. The firm was founded in 1935. In years past, employment at the Fairfield plant exceeded 1,000.

A six month review of Fairfield’s Sunday liquor sales was conducted during Tuesday night’s City Council meeting. With two no votes, the Sunday sale of liquor at the local clubs and golf course was allowed to continue without further review.

An intergovernmental agreement was approved Tuesday night between the City of Fairfield and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to lease the Atkinson Forest Preserve. The city has plans to open the forest to recreational activities. The agreement allows the city to lease the property for ten years.

Coating Applicators of Mount Vernon was the successful bidder to make roof repairs to hangars at the Fairfield Municipal Airport. Their bid was $28,797.

A 16-year-old Fairfield boy was nabbed Tuesday afternoon for pulling a fire alarm at Fairfield Community High School. The boy was cited for disorderly conduct and released to his parents.

townsendTwo arrests have been made in connection with the December 10, 2014 holdup of the First Southern Bank in Carrier Mills. 43-year-old Jeffrey S. Townsend of Winchester Kentucky faces armed robbery charges. His alleged accomplice has been identified as a juvenile from Stonefort. Townslend was arrested by the FBI last Friday in Midland, Va. The juvenile was arrested in Stonefort.  Townsend is being held by Virginia authorities pending extradition to Illinois.

The North Wayne School Board has approved reinstating fall baseball at Cisne High School at no cost to the district. The program will be paid for through fundraisers, activity fees, revenue from banner sales and donations.

Thelma Thomas92-year-old Cisne resident, Thelma Louise Thomas died Tuesday, May 26 at Way-Fair Nursing and Rehab Center in Fairfield. She was a farmer and homemaker. She was a member of the Enterprise United Methodist Church and Cisne Eastern Star Lodge #970.

Survivors include one daughter, Linda (Atmore) Baggot of Mesa, AZ; and one son Jeff (Deborah) Thomas of Cisne, IL. Eight grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren also survive.

A graveside service for Thelma Louise Thomaswill be 1PM Monday, June 1, 2015 at Mt. Auburn Cemetery at Mt. Auburn, IL. There will be no visitation.

Memorials may be given to the Enterprise United Methodist Church and will be accepted at Hosselton Funeral Home.

Carroll Ewing, Jr.58-year-old Fairfield resident, Carroll Lee Ewing, Jr. died at 2:14 p.m. Monday, May 25 at Fairfield Memorial Hospital’s emergency room. A U.S. Air Force veteran, he was general foreman at North American Lighting in Flora. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Fairfield.

Survivors include his parents, Carroll and Janet (Miller) Ewing, Sr. of Fairfield; his wife, Gayla (Mark) Ewing of Fairfield; daughters, Andrea (Andy Fryman) Ewing of Olney, Charlotte Shoobert of St. Neots, England, Ahlandra Mark-Kimbrell of Fairfield and Faith Ewing of Evansville, Ind.; a son, Robert Ewing of Peterborough, England; a sister, Cheryl (Tony) Foeller of Anna, Ill.; a brother, Tim (Mae) Ewing of Lafayette, Louisiana and a granddaughter, London Fryman of Olney.

Funeral services for Carroll Lee Ewing, Jr. will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 2, at the Johnson & Vaughn Funeral Home in Fairfield with burial in Union Cemetery with military honors.

Visitation will be 5 – 8 Monday evening, June 1, at the Johnson & Vaughn Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Memorials may be made to the “Love for London” fund and will be accepted at the Johnson & Vaughn Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Doris Harris Cox Enright

photo_2Doris Harris Cox Enright, 80, of Wichita, Kansas, died at her home Saturday, May 23. She was born and grew up in Wayne County, and graduated from FCHS in 1952. She was married to the late Floyd Eldon Cox, also from Wayne County. Floyd, a Navy jet pilot flying off carriers, was lost at sea in 1963.

Survivors include daughters, step-sons, and siblings, Chalon Harris of Hope, ID, Gayle Harris, Anita (Harold) Witter, and Lori (Joe) Gabbard all of Fairfield, IL. Doris and Floyd had three daughters, Brenda (Jeff) Schramm of Wichita, KS, Julie (Keith) Harvill of Wichita, KS, and Dena (John) Warych of Stevensville, MT.

A memorial service for Doris Harris Cox Enright will be held at 11 AM, Friday, May 29, 2015 at the Reflection Pointe Garden Chapel, 3201 S. Webb Road, Wichita, KS.

Another memorial service will be held in Fairfield in late June.

Four suspects were arrested Thursday morning in a White County, Ill. drug sweep. Dubbed “Operation Whiteout”, officers from the White County Sheriff’s Department, Southern Illinois Drug Task Force and Carmi City Police executed several warrants Thursday morning. Four suspects arrested include: Kevin H. Grant, 21 of Carmi for delivery of a controlled substance – bond $3,500; Edward Perks, Jr., 49 of Carmi for delivery of a controlled substance – bond $2,000; Marcy Nobles, 39 of Carmi or delivery of a controlled substance – bond $2,000; Beverly J. Herald, 53 of Carmi on two counts of delivery of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia – bond $1,500.

AirtexOfficials at Airtex Products have announced plans to move all but 75 jobs out of Fairfield to manufacturing facilities in Mexico and China. The move will begin in September and will take between six and twelve months to complete. The 75 jobs left behind will be primarily shipping and support staff positions. Current employment at Airtex is around 350 workers. The announcement will not affect neighboring Champion Laboratories, which is also owned by the parent company of Airtex, UCI-Fram.

Amy J. Sturms and Amy Duncan, both 31 of Norris City were seriously injured Wednesday when the car they were in was hit from behind by a semi at a U.S. Rt. 45 construction zone in Johnson County. The driver of the semi that hit their car, 58-year-old Ronald H. Parker of Dawson Springs, KY died in the crash.

Shannon WoodrowMore charges have been filed against former Mill Shoals Township clerk Shannon L. Woodrow. Woodrow, 42, now faces a charge of resisting a police officer. Bond in the new case is $2,500. She remains in the White County jail on additional charges of failure to appear in Wayne County and bad checks in Hamilton County. Woodrow was originally arrested on a 2013 charge of stealing Mill Shoals Township funds.

mortis33-year-old Larry J. Mortis of Griffin Indiana has been jailed on charges he used Facebook to solicit an underage Mt. Carmel girl to send him nude photos of herself. Mortis faces one charge of child pornography. He is currently being held in the Pike County jail at Petersburg, Indiana for Wabash County authorities. Bond is $40,000.

A scheduled power outage in Fairfield has been set for this Saturday and Sunday. Power will be out throughout the city for about 20 minutes starting at 6 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Also, the east entrance of the IGA in Fairfield will be closed to traffic during the work.

Janet GibbsJanet Gibbs, 76 of Fairfield died at 2:35 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at Fairfield Memorial Hospital.  She was a longtime employee of the Fairfield National Bank retiring in 1998.

Survivors include a daughter Deborah (Mark) Hosselton of Fairfield, a son Greg (Melissa) Gibbs of Fairfield, a brother Jack (Betty) Enlow of Mt. Erie, a goddaughter Jolie Owen Raimer of Naples, FL, 6 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services for Janet Gibbs will be 10 AM, Wednesday, June 3 at the Fairfield Cumberland Presbyterian Church, with burial in the Maple Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-8 PM Tuesday evening, June 2 at the Johnson and Vaughn Funeral Home.  Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the Fairfield Public Library.

Finis W. “Mac” McComas

macFinis W. “Mac” McComas, 78, of Grayville, IL, died Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at Wabash General Hospital in Mt. Carmel, IL. Mac was a member and Senior Elder of Cornerstone Fellowship Church in Grayville, and was a member of the Grayville VFW Post (past Commander), American Legion, and the Fleet Reserve Association. During his career in the Navy, he completed three tours of duty in Vietnam in 1967, 1971 and 1973, where he logged over nine thousand flight hours in the P-2 and P-3 Orion Antisubmarine aircraft. After his retirement from the Navy, he owned and operated the Grayville Insurance Agency. He also played center position for the undefeated Grayville Basketball Team in 1954.

Survivors include his wife Shirley McComas; a son Kevin McComas; daughter Julie Rinkenberger and Mike Hartman, all of Grayville; brother David McComas of Oklahoma City, OK; two grandchildren, Brandon Raymond and Samantha Hoy and Brian Raymond and Natasha Pearson; four great grandchildren Kali, Josie, Madilynn and Brandon, Jr.

Visitation and funeral are Monday, June 1, 2015, at Cook Funeral Chapel in Grayville. Visitation is at 10 am and continues until funeral time at 1 pm. Burial with military rites will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, in Grayville.

Memorials may be made to Cornerstone Fellowship Church.

Kenneth Leon Smith

smith90-year-old Fairfield resident, Kenneth Leon Smith died at 2:22 p.m. Wednesday, May 27 at his home. A U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of WW II, he was a turret radio operator with over 35 missions in Italy with the 484th Bomber Squadron. He had been a rural mail carrier, working at Burnt Prairie and Mill Shoals. He later transferred to the Fairfield Post Office before retiring on Dec. 1, 1989.

Survivors include his wife, Lola; two sons, Earl L. (Isabel) Smith of Benton and Ray A. (Kim) Smith of Salem, MO; three daughters, Nancy (Darrell) Merritt of Fairfield, Betty S. (Jeffrey) Schroeder of Panama City Beach, FL and Yvonne Gail (Jared) Doggett of Parkersburg, IL; a brother, Norman (Charlene) Smith of Creswell, OR; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild on the way.

Funeral services for Kenneth Leon Smith will be 10 a.m. Monday, June 1 at the Fairfield Cumberland Presbyterian Church with burial in the Burnt Prairie Cemetery with military rites provided by the Wayne Memorial Post 4535 VFW and Anthony Wayne Post 176 American Legion.

Visitation will be 5 – 7 Sunday evening, May 31at Nale’s Funeral Home in Fairfield, which is in charge of all the arrangements.’

Memorials may be made to the Fairfield Cumberland Presbyterian Church and will be accepted at Nale’s Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Clella N. Waters, 82 of Albion, IL died Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at Burgin Manor in Olney, IL. She was a Homemaker and helped her husband on the farm. She was the farm bookkeeper, former 4-H Leader, and a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the HOA quilting Club.

She is survived by her husband Charles of Albion, one daughter; Gail Edwards of Indianapolis, IN, two sons; Robert (Alicia) Waters and Roger Waters both of Albion, IL, one brother Bill (Stella) Straight of Wesley, Arkansas, two grandchildren; Heather (Jeff) Duncan, Matthew (Heather) Waters both of Albion, IL, three step-grandchildren; Lesley, Laura and Michael, four great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Clella N. Waters will be 10 a.m. Monday, June 1 at Bethel United Methodist Church in Ellery with burial in Bethel Cemetery.

Visitation will be 4 – 7 Sunday, May 31 at the Ingram Funeral Home in Albion.

In Lieu of Flowers memorials may be given to the Bethel Cemetery Fund or Albion Senior Citizens.

Survivors include three brothers, Adrian (Nancy) Frodge of Mechanicsburg, PA; Cameron Frodge of Kentucky and Joe (Robin) Frodge of Colorado Springs, CO; six sisters, Karen Kellerman of Grass Valley, CA, Theresa (Kevin) Ukena of Geff, Cindy Swack of Mt. Vernon, IL, Cristi (Duane) Gwaltney of Golconda, Evie Springmeyer of Albion and Gina (David) Waldrop of Fairfield; several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Martha Gaynelle (Frodge) Pope will be 2 p.m. Sunday, May 31 at Nale’s Funeral Home in Fairfield with burial in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be 12 noon Sunday until the time of service at Nale’s Funeral Home in Fairfield.
