A Wayne County Grand Jury returned a true bill of indictment Friday against 44-year-old John R. Robertson and 18-year-old Kevin Lemond both of Fairfield on charges of kidnapping and beating 19-year-old Patrick Vaughan of Fairfield on May 11th. Police say the alleged victim was driven around the country and beaten before being dropped off in the Pond Creek Bottoms. Robertson and Lemond are also accused of smashing Vaughan’s cell phone, preventing him from calling for help. A third suspect, a 16-year-old juvenile also faces charges in connection with the incident, and was initially housed in a juvenile detention center pending a court appearance.
Police questioned a 14-year-old Fairfield boy Friday in connection with a suspected arson fire that damaged the home of Scott Cuff at 405 East Johnson Street. Fire Chief Mike Pottorff said the fire was suspicious based upon the nature of the fire and the fact that there had been a similar fire at the residence a year ago. The teen was questioned at the scene Friday morning and later taken to the city police station for further questioning. Firemen spent over an hour battling the fire and securing the structure for further investigation.
A 16-year-old juvenile female from Norris City was hurt Friday night in an accident in rural White County. State police said the juvenile was northbound on U.S. Route 45 a half-mile north of White County road 1950N when a deer entered the roadway. The juvenile swerved to avoid the deer, causing her vehicle to leave the roadway and travel down an embankment before overturning. She along with a male juvenile passenger were taken to Fairfield Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. No tickets were issued.
Officials with the Illinois State Police have issued an advisory that they will continue to enforce the state’s current ban on concealed firearms until a bill is signed allowing concealed carry. The advisory comes following an a move this week by the Madison County State’s Attorney advising residents of that county that they could start carrying weapons immediately. State police say they will continue to arrest anyone violating the state’s unlawful use of weapons statute. It is unlikely that Illinois’ concealed carry law will go into effect before early next month.
Three people have been arrested in Hamilton County on methamphetamine charges related to the alleged manufacture of meth on property located in Dale. 35-year-old Mac J. Lands of Harrisburg, IL faces charges of manufacturing meth near a church, possession of meth precursors, possession of meth and possession of a hypodermic syringe. 43-year-old Bret A. Stinson of McLeansboro is charged with aggravated meth manufacturing near a church, possession of meth and possession of drug paraphernalia. Tommy D. Irvin of McLeansboro is formally charged with allowing property he owns to be used for the manufacture of meth.
