Chief Darin Hopper has released the Fairfield Fire Departments’ statistics for 2014. There were seven structure fires, seven vehicle fires, and five grass and brush fires, along with five trash, rubbish and illegal burn fires. Significant fires in 2014 included Hoopers Cleaners, Lot #5 at 516 NW 6th Street and at 1007 North First Street. There were also a total of 452 first responder medical assist runs in 2014, along with 22 calls for carbon monoxide poisoning and 22 calls to motor vehicle crashes.
Illinois State Police District 19 Commander, Captain Kelly Hodge, has released the results of an Alcohol Countermeasure Enforcement, or ACE, patrol conducted in Wayne County on New Year’s Eve. Troopers made one DUI arrest and one drug-alcohol related arrest and issued three citations and 21 written warnings. A Roadside Safety Check conducted in Hamilton County at Illinois Routes 14 and 142 on December 20th and 21st resulted in nine registration offenses, four drivers license offenses, two occupant restraint offenses and 15 total citations and arrests.
A plane headed from Tallahassee, FL to Mt. Vernon, IL crashed in southwestern Kentucky Friday night, killing four people including the pilot from Nashville, IL. A seven-year-old girl who survived the crash was able to walk to a nearby home through a wooded area for help, an Associated Press report said. Rain was reported in the area for most of Friday, although the official cause of the crash was still under investigation.
1.34 inches of rainfall was recorded Saturday at the studios of WFIW/WOKZ. While the rain has moved out, much colder weather is expected this week, with high temperatures forecast to drop to the mid teens by Wednesday and lows near zero Thursday morning. No significant snow is in the current forecast.
Registration and evaluations for the Upward Sports program hosted by the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Fairfield will be held this Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Anyone interested in playing Upward Basketball or in cheerleading must come to the church during these times to register. Registration forms can be picked up at the church office Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and noon. There is a $15 registration fee. The program is for children in grades K through 6.
