Six Fairfield Community High School seniors have been recognized as Illinois State Scholars. The students are Audrey Aman, Alexander Brake, Corbin Kakac, Nathaniel Lackey, Samantha Ochs and Connor Scott. Selection is based on SAT, ACT or Prairie State Achievement Exam scores, and/or class rank at the end of the junior year. Illinois State Scholars represent around the top ten percent of high school seniors, from over 670 high schools across Illinois.
Governor Pat Quinn announced Friday that 50 Illinois communities will be receiving awards totaling nearly $1 million to help with the purchase of safety equipment, protective clothing and other tools for firefighters. Locally, the Orchardville Fire Department will be receiving an award of $24,150, while the Lamard Township Fire Department will be receiving $24,206. The Albion Fire Department will be receiving an award in the amount of $18,690.
34-year-old Eric M. Vaughan of Fairfield was arrested Friday morning after police say he barricaded himself inside his home after threatening to murder his estranged wife. Vaughan faces preliminary charges of violating an order of protection and aggravated assault. Police arrived at Vaughan’s home around 10 p.m. Thursday and after over two hours, convinced him to come out of his home. When Vaughan refused orders to drop what he was holding in his hand, an officer shot Vaughan with a Taser and took him into custody. The item turned out to be a hatchet.
The Fairfield Kiwanis Christmas Parade is set for this evening starting at 5 p.m. Linda Monge will be this year’s parade Grand Marshal. Prior to the parade, Fairfield National Bank will offer free hot chocolate on the north side of the bank building beginning at 4:30. Also, chili and sandwiches will be served at the First Christian Church in Fairfield. Kiwanis members will also be collecting non-perishable food items along the parade route for the WADI Food Pantry. Following the parade, the Festival of Lights will be in operation at Leo French Park. Also tonight the village of Cisne’s Christmas Walk will be held on the Cisne Square. Santa will be in the park and participating merchants will have a red bow on their door. There will also be giveaways and refreshments.
Illinois lawmakers have approved legislation allowing bobcat hunting for the first time in over 40 years. The Illinois Senate approved the measure Thursday after the House had passed the bill in March. The hunting and trapping season would occur sometime between November 1st and February 15th, with hunters allowed to kill one bobcat per year.
