Dwain O. Massie – Albion

98-year-old Albion resident, Dwain O. Massie died at 8:20 a.m. Monday, Nov. 20 at Premier Healthcare of New Harmony, Indiana.  A veteran of the U.S. Army from 1940 – 1946, he had been in the banking business for over 70 years, working at Citizens National Bank in Albion.  He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Rotary Club, Edwards County Historical Society and the Tri-State Historical Society.

Survivors include a son, Peter and wife Meeng Leung of Overland Park, KS; two daughters, Lynn Massie and husband Neil Southerland of Albion and Lesa and husband James “Chip” Bennett of Glen Ellyn, Ill; four grandsons and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Dwain O. Massie will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 25 at the First United Methodist Church in Albion with burial in Graceland Cemetery with full military rites provided by the American Legion Post 9590 and VFW Post 8222. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 24, at Nale’s Funeral Home in Albion.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church or the Edwards County Senior Citizens Center and will be accepted at the church or Nale’s Funeral Home in Albion, which is in charge of all the arrangements.

A Mt. Vernon woman awaiting trial in Wayne County on DUI and possession of meth charges has been charged with drug-induced homicide in Jefferson County.  25-year-old Zia D. Flowers has been charged in connection with the Nov. 12 drug overdose death of Lavelta Washington. Bond has been set at $200,000. Flowers failed to appear in Wayne County Circuit Court in connection with the April, 2016 DUI and meth case and an arrest warrant was issued.

Two Otwell, Indiana residents were injured Monday when the Kia Optima the were driving ran off of I-64 in rural Wayne County and overturned. Ethan K. Rose and Cassie M. Borden, both 26 of Otwell were taken to Fairfield Memorial Hospital following the 3:55 a.m. accident.

White County Sheriff Doug Maier is investigating the theft of a 32-feet-long camper trailer from a river camp in southern White County.  The trailer – owned by Tennille L. Neal of Crossville – had been parked along the Wabash River south of Ill. Rt. 141. All of the contents were also taken, including dishes, a queen-size bed, television set and a .22 caliber pistol.

A Thibodaus, LA man has been arrested by Conservation Police on 10 separate deer hunting offenses.  40-year-old Wayne J. Ohmer has been formally charged with 4 counts of unlawful taking of deer, three counts of using the hunting license of another; and three counts of falsifying records. His first appearance in Wayne County Circuit Court has been set for January 9, 2018.

West Salem’s 10th annual community Thanksgiving dinner has been set for this Thursday with serving from 11:30 a. until 1 p.m. in the Hauser Room of the Moravian Church.  Rides can be arranged by phoning Pat Ristvidt at 456-3166.

Earl Tibbs – Fairfield

Earl Tibbs, 71 of Fairfield, died at 7:40pm on Sunday, November 19 near Cisne, IL. He had been an oilfield pumper for Linn Energy prior to his retirement.

Survivors include his wife Linda, his mother Reba, one daughter Jamie (Chris) Wheeler of Fairfield, one granddaughter Casey Austin, one brother Roy (Kathy) Tibbs of Millerstown, Pennsylvania, two sisters Karen (Gary) Rice of Fairfield and Diane (Don) Moore of Griffin, Indiana.

Funeral services for Earl Tibbs will be held at 10am on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at the Johnson and Vaughn Funeral Home in Fairfield with burial in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-7pm on Friday, November 24th at the funeral home.

Memorial donations can be made to the Dr. Scranton Memorial Cancer Fund and will be accepted at the Johnson and Vaughn Funeral Home which is in charge of arrangements.

Benny Joe Elliott – Grayville native

Benny Joe Elliott, beloved husband, brother and friend went home to be with Jesus on Tuesday, November 14th at 4 pm. His wife, Mary Ann (Papparazzo) has been by his side throughout a long illness. He was born on February 6, 1952 to Dennis C Elliott Jr and Patricia (Wray) who have preceded him in death. He and Mary spent their life working alongside his father in the grocery and restaurant business. Ben graduated from Grayville High School in 1970.

Ben is survived by 2 brothers, Dennis W (Linda) of Evansville, IN and Phillip (Audrey) of Gillette, WY. As well as 4 sisters, Kathy (Darrel) Thompson of Carmi, IL, Cindy Elliott of Vincennes, IN,, Lori (Marvin) Wiseman of Browns, IL, and Tricia (Mark) Abrams of Newburgh, IN. He is also survived by 15 nieces and nephews, 33 great nieces and nephews and 1 great, great niece.

A Celebration of Life Service for Benny Joe Elliott will be held on Sunday, November 26th at Grace Fellowship Church (Fortney) in Browns at 3 pm.

A vacant home in Springerton was destroyed by fire Monday night.  The home, owned by Stephen Churchwell, caught fire around 9 p.m. Monday.  Firemen from Enfield, Norris City and the Fairfield Rural Fire Department battled the blaze until around 2 a.m. Tuesday. Firemen were called back around 6 a.m. Tuesday to douse some hot spots. The Illinois State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause.

A large machine shed owned by Mike Dean south of Albion was destroyed by fire Monday night. Albion Rural Fire Department personnel were hampered in their firefighting efforts by strong southwest winds. No injuries were reported. The building was considered a total loss.

The Edwards County Community Unit School Board met this week. Members approved the employment of Lonnie Murbarger as the Edwards County High School softball coach.

The Automotive Technology Program of Frontier Community College has been notified that it has obtained the ability to serve as a center for Snap-on Multimeter Certification. The FCC program has already been awarded master certification from the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation.

Alexander L. Fillingham of Ridgway has been sentenced to 4 ½ years in prison after pleading guilty in Gallatin County to a charge of burglary.  He has also been ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $900.

Erica L. Wilson of Shawneetown has been sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty in Gallatin County Circuit Court to a charge of theft over $500. She was also ordered to pay restitution amounting to $6,300.

John W. “Jay” Edwards – Formerly of McLeansboro

John W. “Jay” Edwards, 95, formerly of McLeansboro, IL, passed away Monday, November 20, 2017 at his residence in Orlando, FL. John was  a distinguished United States Army Veteran having served during World War II where he fought in the New Guinea Campaign and the Battle of Luzon.  For his actions during these battles he was awarded two Bronze Stars and a Silver Star.  He was also a lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW Posts.

Survivors included one son, Marion W. “Bill” (Margaret “Peggy”) Edwards of Orlando, FL; one daughter, Carmen Edwards of Englewood, FL; and two grandchildren, Bill Edwards JR. and Teresa French.  Three great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services for Jay Edwards will be held Monday, November 27 at 11:00 a.m. at the Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro with burial at the IOOF Cemetery in McLeansboro with graveside military rites performed by American Legion Post #106.

Visitation will be held Sunday, November 26, 2017 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro.

Memorial donations may be made to the donor’s choice and will be accepted at the Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro.

Anthony “Tony” Medder – Cisne

56-year-old Cisne resident, Anthony “Tony” Medder died on Tuesday, November 21 at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh, Indiana. He passed away after a courageous 5 and a half year battle of stage IV prostate cancer. He was a member of the Cisne Christian Church, where he served as a deacon.

Among his survivors is his wife Jonna (Henson) Medder of Cisne; mother, Sue Musgrave of Wayne City; step-mother, Robyn Medder of Washington; daughter, Rachel Parsley of Fairfield; sons, Ryan (Alyssa) Medder of Abilene, TX, Cody (Jennifer) Burroughs of Geff, and Todd (Caitlin) Burroughs of Kell, IL; grandchildren, Carleigh Burroughs of San Diego, CA, Lexa Parsley of Fairfield, IL, Mattox Burroughs of Geff, and Kaydi Burroughs of Geff; brothers, David (Sherry) Medder of Miami, FL, CA Musgrave of Wayne City, and Jeremiah (Ann) Medder of San Diego, CA; sisters, Linda (John) Legg of Fairfield, Lindsey (Bob) Bullard of Wayne City, Zuri Medder of Wayne City, Jennifer (Kevin) Musgrave of Fairfield, and Heather (Kelly) Smith of Bluford; and maternal-grandmother, Jueneta Taylor of Fairfield.

Funeral services for Tony Medder will be 11:00am Saturday, November 25, 2017, at Cisne Christian Church with burial at Cisne Cemetery.

Visitation will be 9:00am-11:00am prior to the service Saturday at the church.

Sue Vaught Tullis – Fairfield

74-year-old Fairfield resident, Sue Vaught Tullis died at 8:35 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21 at Fairfield Memorial Hospital.  She was retired from North American Lighting after 14 years as a base coat operator. She was a member of the Ashland Christian Church.

Survivors include her husband, Jack Tullis of Fairfield; two sons, Rob S. Vaught and Susan Bullard of Fairfield and Rodney A. Vaught of Clearwater, Florida; four daughters, Pam L. Tullis of Fairfield, Jacque K. and husband Fred Shelton of Fairfield, Kimberly D. Vaught of Columbus, Georgia and Ginnette and husband Phil Dawson of Fayetteville, Arkansas; a sister, Phyllis Banton of Indianapolis, Indiana; sixteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Sue Vaught Tullis will be 2 p.m. Saturday, November 25 at Nale’s Funeral Home in Fairfield with burial at burnt Prairie Cemetery.

Visitation will be 12 noon Saturday, Nov. 25 until the time of service at Nale’s Funeral Home in Fairfield.

At this month’s meeting of the Illinois Eastern Community Colleges Board of Trustees, members voted to hire Brittany Harris as a nursing instructor at Frontier Community College in Fairfield. The board also approved a 2.5% pay increase for all non-bargaining unit full-time employees.

Carmi police report the arrest of two Evansville men on drug charges following a traffic stop. Blake A. Fisher (right) and Brandon Lee Phillips (left) face charges of being in possession of meth, drug paraphernalia and hypodermic syringes. Fisher was also cited for driving on a suspended license.

Colton E.D. Seibert, 23 of West Salem (left)  and Beau D. Price, 24 of Mt. Carmel (right) have been arrested on drug charges after Wabash County police stopped their vehicle near Keensburg.  Seibert faces a charge of DUI drugs. Price was cited for delivery of a look-alike substance – synthetic marijuana.

31-year-old Clayton S. Kirkman of Mt. Carmel has been arrested on a charge he was in possession of a Polaris 900 XP that had been stolen out of Jasper County in March of this year. Kirkman was taken into custody after a Wabash County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to a report the driver was “passed out drunk or deceased” behind the wheel of the vehicle. Kirkman was taken to the hospital in Mt. Carmel where he was treated and released.

The region will see two Christmas parades this Saturday.  The annual Albion Area Chamber of Commerce Lighted Christmas parade will start at 5 p.m. The theme is “A Candyland Christmas”.  The White County nighttime Christmas parade is set to begin at 6 p.m. this Saturday with lineup at the First Baptist Church parking lot at Main and Oak in Carmi.

Suspected serial killer Bruce D. Mendenhall of Albion is being featured on the Discovery Channel TV show “Grave Secrets”. An over-the-road trucker from Albion, Mendenhall stands convicted of the 2007 murder of Sara Hulbert of Nashville, Tennessee and is accused of several other killings. The show airs on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on Investigation Discovery.

24-year-old Anthony Wade Skipworth of Monroe City, Indiana has been jailed after he led police on a chase from Lawrence County into Wabash County.  Skipworth was arrested after Wabash County police deployed stop sticks and deflated the tires on the suspect’s GMC Sonoma. The suspect is also accused of tossing a mobile meth lab out of his car during the chase.

The first weekend of shotgun deer hunting in Illinois saw a harvest of 51,365 whitetail deer. That’s down about 3,000 from the same period last year.  In Wayne County, hunters bagged 977 deer. The seven-day firearm season wraps up with a second firearm season November 30 – December 3.

 

The annual Albion Chamber of Commerce lighted Christmas Parade is this Saturday with a start time of 5 p.m.  This year’s theme is “A Candyland Christmas”.  The White County nighttime lighted Christmas Parade is also this Saturday evening with a start time of 6 p.m. Fairfield’s Kiwanis Club Christmas parade has been set for Saturday, Dec. 2 with a start time of 4:30.

Frontier Community College is now offering two online Spanish classes for dual credit high school students and college students for the spring semester. The 16-week courses will run from January 8 – May 10 and will be taught by Amy Currie.  To register, call the college at 842-3711.

Emma Dee Irvin – McLeansboro

Emma Dee Irvin, 96, a resident of McLeansboro, IL, passed away Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at Ferrell Hospital in Eldorado, IL.

Emma is survived by one son, Denzil Edward (Janice Ann) Irvin of McLeansboro, and one daughter, Deloris June (Marion) Hutcheson of Henderson, KY.  Also surviving are sister-in-law, Beverly Wheeler of Romeoville, IL; three grandchildren, Marion Hutcheson Jr., Kimberly Darr and Jason Irvin; six great-grandchildren, Joshua Hutcheson, Matthew Hutcheson, Justin Darr, Jacob Darr, Wesley Irvin and Daniel Irvin.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, November 26, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro with burial at Hickory Hill Cemetery near Broughton.

Visitation will be held from 4:30 to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at the Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro.

Judith A. “Judie” Clodfelter – Bone Gap

Judith A. “Judie” Clodfelter, 82 of Bone Gap died on Tuesday November 21st at Deaconess Midtown Hospital, Evansville. Judie was a member of the Bone Gap Christian church. She retired from Champion Laboratories in Albion, IL. She was a very talented seamstress and upholsterer.

Surviving are three daughters, Teresa (Darren) Garner of Bone Gap, IL. Kim (Mike) Fleming of Ferdinand, IN., and Lisa (Roger) Brown of Albion, IL. One son, Michael (Nancy) Clodfelter of Fairfield, IL. Nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services for Judith A. “Judie” Clodfelter will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday November 26th at the Bone Gap Christian Church with burial at Bone Gap Cemetery.

Visitation will be 12 noon until th e time of service on Sunday, Nov. 26 at the church.

Memorials may be made in Judies’ honor to Wabash Animal Buddies or Bone Gap Christian Church and will be accepted at the church.

Paul Collins- Wayne City

Paul Collins, 79 of Wayne City, died at 7:09 P.M. NOV 23, 2017  at  his home. Paul was born February 5th, 1938 to John H. and Pauline (Cline) Collins. He married Carline Preiss on April 5th, 1958.

Paul is survived by a son, Doug and wife Missy Collins of Bluford, a daughter, Pam and husband Kenny Aydt of Dahlgren, IL. One Sister Sandra Roesch husband Larry of Wayne City, IL, 5-Grandchildren and 6-greatgrandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents and wife Carline.

Services for Mr. Collins will be 11:00 a.m. on Monday November 27th at Archie L. Sanders Chapel Cemetery with visitation from 10:00 a.m. till time of services.

Memorial can be made to Carline Collins Scholarship Fund and will be accepted at Richardson Funeral Home in Wayne City which is in Charge of all arrangements.

Herta G. Swartzbaugh Died on Thursday, November 23, 2017 with her husband Sam by her side.

Herta was born on January 4, 1942 in Heidelberg, Germany to Wendelin J. and Marie (Froehlich) Geiser.  Sam and Herta were married at the Heidelberg castle on May 5, 1969.

She is survived by her husband Sam, children:  Martin (Marla) Swartzbaugh, Daniel Swartzbaugh and Bettina (Paul) Carrell, all of West Salem, IL.

Grandchildren include:  Madison Swartzbaugh, Eli Steber, Bryton Steber, Brianna Swartzbaugh, Jacob Carrell, Makayla Carrell, John Carrell and Aaron Carrell, to be arriving in February.

Visitation will be Monday, November 27, 2017 from 6 to 8 PM at Ingram Funeral Home in West Salem. Funeral service will be Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at 10AM at the funeral home with burial to follow at the Moravian Cemetery.

The Old Country Market owners in West Salem will have contractors remove the fueling units and storage tanks in front of Citizens National Bank’s ATM machines. For safety reasons CNB will temporarily close the West Salem ATM effective Monday morning and will remain closed until the completion of the contractor’s project, which could take up to 2 weeks.

At least a dozen Illinois Department of Children and Family Services Workers have been attacked or seriously threatened while trying to protect children or investigate mistreatment allegations since 2013. One DCFS investigator was choked and pushed by a mother after being called to a Chicago elementary School last week on a report that the woman’s son had a burned ear. Illinois lawmakers drafted legislation to stiffen criminal penalties for such assaults in the wake of the September beating of DCFS Investigator Pamela Sue Knight. She has been in a coma since being attacked while trying to take protective custody of a child.

Preliminary investigative details indicate at 9:17 p.m. Thursday night a car driven by a 16-year-old female from Marshall was traveling Eastbound on County Road 300 North just east of County Road 1000 East. The driver was traveling too fast and lost control of the vehicle. The car traveled off the North side of the roadway and struck a ditch before traveling back onto the roadway where it came to rest. The Driver was cited for Exceeding the one Passenger Limit and driving too fast for Conditions. Both passengers were ticketed for failure to wear seat-belts.


Russell D. Felix- Fairfield

Russell D. Felix, 68 of Fairfield passed away at 4:17 AM, Friday, November 24, 2017 at his home.  He was born on March 8, 1949 in Barnhill to George and Ethel (Medler) Felix, and was an Army Veteran serving in the Vietnam War.  Russell was a machine repairman at Airtex Products, retiring after 43 years and had farmed with is late brother Dale Felix.

Russell is survived by his wife Lisa Felix of Fairfield, daughters Abby (Matthew) Keel of Mt. Juliet, TN and Allison (Dan Clark) Leathers of Fairfield, granddaughter Madeline Keel, a brother Harold Felix of Kentland, IN, and a sister in law Emma dean Felix of Barnhill.  He was preceded in death by his parents, 5 sisters and a brother.

Private services in honor of Russell Felix will be held at a later date with burial in Maple Hill Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers memorials in his honor may be made to the Good Samaritan Hospice and will be accepted at the Johnson and Vaughn Funeral Home which is in charge of the arrangements.

Shirley Clemons – Macedonia

81-year-old Shirley Clemons of Macedonia, IL died at 3:50 P.M. Thursday, November 23, 2017 at the home of her daughter in Equality, IL. She was a homemaker.

Shirley is survived by one Daughter, Sharon Clemons and Husband Bradley of Equality, IL, one son Rickey Shepard and Wife Judy of Alton, IL, 12 Grandchildren, 11 Great Grandchildren, 5 Great-Great Grandchildren, one Brother Howard Crawford and Wife Ellen, Springfield, MO, and one Sister Mildred Fisher, of St. Louis, MO.

She is preceded in death by her Parents, one daughter, Rita Cook, and Son-in-Law, Steve Cook.

Visitation for Shirley Clemons will be held on Tuesday, November 28, from 10 a.m. until 12:00 Noon at Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro, IL

Fairfield Memorial Hospital is hosting a special event reserved just for children with sensory issues and/or Autism to have a special time to visit Santa on December 9th from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. For Children with sensory issues and/or Autism, it can often be too much for them to visit a busy mall or other public venue to see Santa. Fairfield Memorial Hospital believes this is a special time for all children and will be providing a sensory-friendly area in the FMH Medical Arts Complex where these children will be able to visit Santa and have their photo taken for free. If you would like to schedule your child’s 20 minute session with Santa, please contact FMH’s Administrative Assistant, Mary Knight, at 618-847-8243. Space is limited therefore pre-registration is required.

Tickets for a chance to win a large gift basket that includes a variety of prizes valued at over $900 are now available from Frontier Community College students in the TRIO Student Support Services Club. Illinois Conservation Police are cracking down on hunters who violate the state’s deer hunting laws. Enforcement in Pike and Adams Counties focused on property managed by Hadley Creek Outfitters. The firm is accused of illegally baiting land for deer hunting.  Bait includes mineral licks and piled or scattered corn. More than 50 citations were issued for various hunting violations.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is seeking applicants for the position of Conservation Police Officer Trainee. While the department is not yet hiring, the selection process will begin with a written exam in January with the intent to hire up to 20 new officers next year. Police will be patrolling parking lots of Illinois businesses this holiday shopping season to ticket people illegally parking in spaces reserved for people with disabilities.  Drivers caught misusing a disabled parking placard also face potential fines or suspensions.

First United Methodist Church in Fairfield will be hosting a “Blue Christmas” service on Thursday, Dec. 7.  The special service is for those in the Fairfield area who are experiencing grief, loss or a difficult time during the holiday season. The concert – free and open to the public will begin at 7 p.m.

State Police officials say they will be conducting seat belt enforcement patrols in White and Hamilton Counties during the month of December.  Illinois law requires all vehicle passengers – front and back – to be buckled up.

Mildred Geneva Fehrenbacher, age 102, of Flora, Illinois, passed away Sunday, November 26, 2017, at Lavender Ridge in Effingham, Illinois.

A native of Wayne County, Mildred was co-owner and operator of the Flora Newsstand along with her husband.  She was a member of the Community of Christ Flora Branch and enjoyed volunteering with the Clay County Hospital Auxiliary.

Survivors include two sons: Jack (Janie) Fehrenbacher of Tulsa, OK, and Neal (Janet) Fehrenbacher of Flora; 3 grandchildren: Paul Fehrenbacher of Broken Arrow, OK, Tonya (Bob) Anderson of Flora, and Tony (Lindsey) Fehrenbacher of Xenia; along with 7 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mildred Fehrenbacher will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 29, 2017, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora with burial at Elmwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora.

Memorial donations in Mildred’s memory may be given to Clay County Hospice and will be accepted at the funeral home.
