Norma Faye (Creswell) Miller

miller87-year-old McLeansboro resident, Norma Faye Miller died at 6 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18 at Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro. She had worked at Pool’s Bargain Center and Victor Dana in Robinson and was a housewife.

Survivors include three children; Karin Miller, Debbie Campbell and Craig Miller; a sister, Carol Russell of Artesia, NM; 6 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The Visitation  is 6 to 8pm Thursday,  Dec. 19 at Harre Funeral Home, McLeansboro, IL.
The Funeral is Friday,  Dec. 20 at Goodwine Funeral Home,  Robinson, IL  at 11 a.m.
There is a visitation from 10 to 11am at the funeral home on Friday  

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ainad Temple Shriners Hospital for Children.

OVROfficials with the Fairfield, Illinois-based Ohio Valley Resources have announced an agreement has been reached to provide financing for the development of a $1 billion nitrogen fertilizer plant north of Rockport, Ind. Doug Wilson, President of Ohio Valley Resources announced Thursday that he has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Tierra Del Fuego Power & Chemical Company, Ltd. (TEQSA) for the development of the nitrogen plant in Spencer County.  “The memorandum of understanding provides for a mutually-beneficial arrangement to move the project forward with the existing team members and an equity investment from a credible, well established international partner,” Wilson said. “Representatives from TEQSA have toured the site and have obtained shareholder approval to proceed with the development of the project. Approximately 1,200 workers will be needed to construct the plant during a 3-year period. Upon its projected completion in 2017, the facility will employ approximately 80 full-time workers.

The Volunteers for a Progressive Fairfield Festival of Lights Celebration at Leo French Park has been moved to Monday night.  The girls from the Clothes Line will be the hosts for the evening. Carriage rides will be featured, along with miniature horses, Santa and Mrs. Clause and free corn dogs and hot chocolate. – Again – the Festival of Lights Celebration – moved to Monday night, Dec. 23.

miller, justinFairfield Memorial Hospital announces that Orthopaedic Surgeon, Dr. Justin Miller of Wabash General Hospital’s Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine Clinic, is expanding his service to the Fairfield community.  Dr. Miller will begin seeing patients in Suite E of Fairfield Memorial Hospital’s Medical Arts Complex each Wednesday, beginning January 8.  Dr. Miller is a native of Grayville. In May of 2008 he graduated from the University Of Louisville School Of Medicine with his Doctor of Medicine degree.  He completed his Orthopedic Surgery residency in Indianapolis at the Indiana University School of Medicine in June of 2013. Dr. Miller is the son of Joe and Connie Jo Miller of Grayville, and he is married to the former Meredith McDaniel, the daughter of Mark and the late Nancy McDaniel of Albion.

Today’s winner in the Fairfield Community High School After Prom Committee’s Twelve Days of Christmas promotion is Steven Sons. Steven wins $200.  Friday’s drawing will be worth $250.

The Albion Christmas Parade has been rescheduled for this Saturday at 5 p.m.  Lineup will be at 4 p.m.  After the parade, the Albion Community Christmas Celebration will run from 6 – 9 p.m.

Pioneer Oil Company of Lawrenceville has started drilling a well in downtown Terre Haute on property owned by Indiana State University. The rig is expected to be on site for about a week.

Clay County Sheriff’s officials report the arrest of two Xenia residents on charges of burglary and possession of meth precursors.  Dalton Pierson, 20 and Christopher Brown, 32 have been booked into the Clay County jail.

Harrisburg School Superintendent Dennis Smith is resigning.  After more than 7 years as head of the Harrisburg School District, Smith will step down Jan. 1.  His contract runs through June of next year. As part of his severance package, he will be paid $100,000.

Survivors include a sister, Marie Smith of Fairfield.

Services for Doris Grandstaff will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21 at the Johnson & Vaughn Funeral Home in Fairfield with burial in Laird Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service Saturday, Dec. 21 at the Johnson & Vaughn Funeral Home in Fairfield.

banks, jr.Bond has been set at $250,000 for a Carmi, Ill. man accused of sexually assaulting a juvenile under the age of 13. Louis E. Banks, Jr. 49 of 710 Fackney Street in Carmi was taken into custody Thursday on a White County warrant charging him with two counts of Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault of a Child; a class-X felony. Illinois State Police investigators allege the unlawful sexual conduct happened on or about December 16 of this year.  Banks was lodged in the White County jail at Carmi pending a preliminary hearing. If convicted, Banks faces up to 30 years in prison on each count.

A Flood Watch has been issued for all of Southern Illinois through late Saturday night.  The heaviest rainfall is expected from late tonight through about midnight Saturday night.  As much as five inches of rain could fall across the region, causing localized flooding.

At Thursday night’s meeting of the Fairfield Community High School Board, members voted to create the position of assistant principal for the 2014-2015 school year.  Last month, the board voted to combine the positions of principal and superintendent starting next year. Jill Fulkerson will serve as FCHS Superintendent/Principal following the retirement of David Savage at the end of the current school year.

The Fairfield High School Board voted Thursday night to add three new courses for next school year. The classes are Crafts, Exploring Music and Computer Assisted Art.

Today’s winner in the Fairfield Community High School After Prom Committee Twelve Days of Christmas promotion is Larry Rost.  Larry wins $250.  Saturday’s drawing will be worth $500.

Two Fairfield women were arrested Thursday evening for shoplifting at the Fairfield Super Wal-Mart.  Shannell L. Tyler and Sarah Leggero, both 22 were arrested for allegedly stealing $39.10 worth of miscellaneous merchandise.

Nathan Ford, 18 of McLeansboro and Aaron Smith, 21 of Elizabethtown, IL were sentenced to prison Thursday for stealing a home security system from a residence in McLeansboro.   The two took the system from the victim’s doorstep shortly after it was delivered.  Ford drew a 5 year sentence – Smith 3 years.  Both are expected to serve their time in the Illinois Department of Corrections Boot Camp.

75-year-old Albion resident, Ray Metcalf died at 11:56 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 19 at his home.  He was CEO of Red Hill.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Metcalf of Albion; a son, Roger Metcalf of Mt. Carmel; a daughter Rayna Garwood and her husband Steve of Mt. Carmel; three brothers, Robert of Jasper, IN, Richard of Lebanon, TN and Rodney of Evansville, IN and 4 grandchildren.

Services for Ray Metcalf will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22 at Nale’s Funeral Home in Albion with burial in Graceland Cemetery. Those attending the service are encouraged to dress casually.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21 at Nale’s Funeral Home in Albion.

Memorials may be made to Tip Hospice or the Senior Citizens Center.

72-year-old Effingham resident, Lois Carol Knierim died at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19 at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Effingham. She had been employed at the USDA office in Louisville, IL.

Survivors include her husband, Ed Knierim of Effingham; sons, Dr. Harry Carter and wife Kim of Fairfield and Leonard Carter and wife Kim of Louisville; a daughter, Rhonda Newby and fiancee Pete Hoke of Robinson; brothers, Ronald Keck of Flora and Dwayne Keck and wife Cindy of Huntingburg, IN; sisters, Sandy Dial and husband Gleason of Jerseyville and Kathy Turner and husband, Richard of Clay City plus six grandchildren.

Services for Lois Carol Knierim will be 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 23 at the J.W. Neal Funeral Home in Louisville, IL with burial in Dillman Cemetery at Sailor Springs, IL.

Visitation will be 6 – 8 Sunday evening, Dec. 22 at the Neal Funeral Home in Louisville.

Memorials may be made to the Cornerstone Christian Church and will be accepted at the Neal Funeral Home in Louisville.

A Flood Watch remains in effect for the region through 6 a.m. Sunday.  Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Paducah, KY, say the area is expected to receive two to four inches of rainfall by early Sunday morning.  Flood Warnings have been posted along the Little Wabash River at Clay City and the Wabash River at Mt. Carmel, IL as a result of the expected rains.  At Clay City the Little Wabash is expected to jump ten feet today, cresting at just under 20 feet Sunday.  At Carmi, moderate flooding is expected, with a crest of 34.4 feet expected Thursday, over seven feet above flood stage.  The Wabash at Mt. Carmel, IL is forecast to rise to nearly 21 feet by late next week, about three feet over flood stage.

Lawrence County Circuit Judge Robert Hopkins ruled Friday that the March 25, 2012 stabbing death of 78-year-old Robert V. Westall of Lawrenceville, IL was “brutal and heinous and indicative of wanton cruelty”.  The ruling made Westall’s killer, 22-year-old Tyler R. McQueen of Mt. Carmel, IL, eligible for a sentence of natural life in prison.  Special Prosecutor Michael Vujovich had argued for a 78-year-sentence, one year for each year of the victim’s life, while McQueen’s defense attorney, Matt Vaughan of Fairfield, asked for a 20-year sentence.  Eventually, Judge Hopkins rejected a sentence of natural life and instead ordered McQueen to serve 50 years in prison.  Under Illinois law, he will have to serve 100% of the sentence.

Two Richland County residents have drawn stiff federal prison sentences after pleading guilty to charges related to the manufacture of methamphetmaine.  32-year-old Timothy L. Garrard of Olney was sentenced to 15 years after pleading guilty to a three count federal indictment.  In an unrelated case, 32-year-old Carol R. Wille of Noble was sentenced to eight years in federal prison after pleading guilty to a single federal indictment charging her with possession of pseudophedrine pills knowing they would be used to make meth.  She was also ordered to serve three years parole after her jail time.

19-year-old Edward B. Healy of Norris City was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident following a wreck on White County Road 600E at Illinois Route 141 Friday morning.  State police said Healy was driving a pickup southbound on White County Road 6ooE and failed to yield at the intersection, crossing into the path of a vehicle driven by 66-year-old Gail E. Glass of Harrisburg, IL.  Neither driver was hurt, however a passenger in Glass’ vehicle, 64-year-old Connie J. Glass of Harrisburg, IL was taken to Ferrel Hospital in Eldorado, IL for treatment of her injuries.

Bond has been set at $250,000 for 49-year-old Louis E. Travis Dale Goldman 257-year-old Grayville resident, Travis Dale Goldman, died Thursday, December 19 at his home.  He was retired from Snap On Tools and recently worked as a desk clerk at the Windsor Oaks Motel in Grayville.

Surviving are a son, Tony of Fairfield; two sisters, Charlotte Barnes of Princeton, KY and Connie Munsey of Henderson, KY; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services for Travis Dale Goldman will be at 1 p.m. Monday, December 23 at the Cook Funeral Chapel in Grayville.  Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery at Grayville.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. Monday, December 23 until the time of service at the Cook Funeral Chapel in Grayville.

Flood warnings are in effect along the Little Wabash River from Clay City to Carmi and the Wabash River at Mt. Carmel as a result of recent heavy rainfall.  A Flood Warning is also in effect for today along the Skillet Fork River at Wayne City, which went above flood stage Saturday night, and is expected to crest today at 19.8 feet, nearly five feet above flood stage.  At Clay City the Little Wabash River is just under 20 feet this morning, and forecast to crest at 20.2 feet today.  At Carmi a crest of 34.8 feet is forecast today, nearly eight feet above flood stage.  On the Wabash River at Mt. Carmel a crest of just under 25 feet is expected Wednesday evening.  Flood stage is 19 feet.  Friday and Saturday’s rainfall amounted to 3.86 inches here at the studios of WFIW/WOKZ.

The Volunteers for a Progressive Fairfield’s Festival of Lights Celebration will be held Monday night at Leo French Park.  The event was originally scheduled for last night, but was postponed due to the expected rainfall.  Special hosts for Monday evening will be the girls from the Clothes Line.  Mark Curtis will have carriage rides available for a fee, and the Grote family will have their miniature horses available.  Pictures with Santa will be available by donation courtesy of Misty Titzer Photography, and the C.P. Church Youth Group will present a live nativity.  Free corn dogs and hot chocolate will be available courtesy of Jan and Dean Linder.

Some projects to be overseen by the Illinois Department of Transportation have been announced.  Over $3.2 million has been allocated for projects in southern Illinois under the state’s Illinois Jobs Now! Capital construction program.  In Hamilton County, work will include the replacement of a bridge carrying a township road over Riley Creek about three miles east of Hoodville at a cost of just over $160,000.  In White County, a bridge carrying U.S. Route 45 over a creek north of Norris City is scheduled to be replaced, at a cost of about $67,000.

State police are reminding Illinois motorists of traffic law changes taking effect January 1st.  Among the changes is the increase in the state’s speed limit on rural interstates from 65 to 70 mph.  Counties that are exempt include St. Clair, Madison, Lake, McHenry, Will, Kane, DuPage and Cook.  Another change bans the use of hand-held cell phone devices behind the wheel.  Those exempt include law enforcement officers or first responders and drivers reporting emergencies, as well as those using electronic devices while parked on the shoulder of a roadway.

Bessie Schroeder 20001Bessie Schroeder, 80 of Rinard, IL died at 7:11PM Saturday, December 21, 2013 at her home. Bessie was a homemaker and waitress and was of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by two sons Jerry (Paula) West of Rinard, IL and Michael West of Phoenix, AZ; seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral service for Bessie Schroeder will be 10:30AM Friday, December 27, 2013 at Hosselton Funeral Home. Burial will be in Ebenezer Cemetery at Fairfield, IL. Visitation will be 5-7PM Thursday, December 26, 2013 at the Hosselton Funeral Home.

Thieves broke into the Fairfield VFW Post over the weekend, stealing between $500 and $600 in cash.  The burglary – reported to City Police Friday morning, was captured on surveillance video. The intruder was wearing a light colored sweat shirt with the hood pulled up over his head.

Someone has stolen three sections of aluminum handicap ramps from the local chapter of the Disabled American Veterans.  The items – worth an estimated $1,500 were taken from the Auxiliary Police Department building in downtown Fairfield.

Area rivers continue to rise in the wake of nearly four inches of rainfall over the weekend.  The Wabash at Mount Carmel is forecast to crest at more than six feet above flood stage by this Saturday.  The Little Wabash at Carmi is forecast to crest later today at 30.06 ft.  The Little Wabash east of Fairfield was at 23.4 ft.

Julie Healy has been hired as the new Superintendent of the North Wayne School District and Cisne Middle School Principal effective July 1, 2014.  Julie currently serves as Principal of the North Clay High School at Louisville.

Leah Bowers, the daughter of Jerry and Jennifer Bowers of Barnhill is the winner of this year’s New Hope Spelling Bee.  The runner up is Lance Jolley, the son of Randall and Susan Jolly of Fairfield.

Volunteers for a Progressive Fairfield’s Festival of Lights Celebration is tonight at Leo French Park in Fairfield.  Santa and Mrs. Clause will be on hand, along with the Grote Family miniature horses.  Jan and Dean Linder will be providing free corn dogs and hot chocolate as well.

From God’s Loving Arms to Ours, Ben and Alexandria (Peach) Weedon, of Fairfield proudly announce the birth of their first child, a son, Cody Alan Weedon. He arrived on Monday, December 16, 2013 at 1:06 a.m. at St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Cody Alan weighed in at 8lb. 10oz. and is 20 1/2 inches long.

 This new little family is proudly welcomed home by Paternal Grandparents, Rod (Lisa) Weedon, of Fairfield and Kara (David) Taylor, of Cisne. Maternal Grandparents, Billy (Sam) Peach, of Carmi and Sheila (Bill) Colbert, of Albion.

92-year-old Fairfield resident, Augusta Colvin died at 12:20 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23 at Wayfair Nursing & Rehab in Fairfield. She had owned and operated Colvin’s Red and White and later Colvin’s Drive-in with her husband, Jim before retiring. She was also the manager of the Warehouse Outlet in Fairfield.

Survivors include a son, Otis Tennant of Underwood, TN; two step-sons, Tom Colvin of Fairfield and Dan Colvin of Florida; two daughters, Sharon Ewing of Fairfield and Cindy Israel and husband, Dr. David Israel of Mount Vernon, IL; 17 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Services for Augusta Colvin will be 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 27 at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Fairfield with burial in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 – 7 Thursday evening, Dec. 26 at Nale’s Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Memorials may be made to St. Edwards Catholic Church or to Cisne Nursing and Rehab’s Activity Fund and will be accepted at Nale’s Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Herbert F. ”Herb” Burt , age 91, of Clay City, IL died at his home on Saturday, December 21, 2013.

Surviving are his children: Pat Burt of Clay City, Debbie Leininger of Freeport, and David Burt of Flora; 5 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Private funeral services for Herbert F. Burt were held December 23, 2013 with interment in Elmwood Cemetery, Flora, with military honors. Memorials may be made to the Baptist Children’s Home and Family Services. Arrangements were handled by Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora.

Survivors include a son, Jeff (Teresa) Angle of Fairfield and two daughters, Renee Angle and Kristi (Tony) Crawford, both of Olney; three grandchildren, Jordan Angle, Kacie Crawford and Courtney Crawford, along with several nephews and nieces.

Survivors include her husband, Bobby Stroud of Grayville; sons, Michael (Dana) Johnson of Waltonville, IL and Bobby (Athena) Stroud of Sparta, TN; daughters Cindy (Lee) Judge of Grayville, Mary Kay (Troy) McNeely of Marshall, IL and Heather Stroud of Effingham; ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services for Kathryn M. Stroud will be 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 27 at the Cook Chapel in Grayville with burial in Ridge Cemetery west of Grayville.

Some area rivers continue to rise in the wake of nearly four inches of rainfall last weekend.  The Wabash at Mount Carmel is now forecast to crest at 24.1 feet by Sunday, more than five feet above flood stage. No significant precipitation is in the forecast for the remainder of the week.

A certified White County Concealed Carry firearms instructor has been formally charged in a deer poaching incident.  45-year-old Gary Maricle faces charges of spotlighting deer, hunting animals from the roadway and two counts of unlawful taking or possession of a deer. He is scheduled for a first appearance in White County Circuit Court on February 6. Illinois Conservation Police made the arrest.

ELMORE, DAMON R17-year-old Damon R. Elmore of Olney has been arrested on charges he burglarized the Orchardville Church on Thanksgiving day, stealing $800 cash from one office and $20 cash from another.  Elmore (pictured) was arrested in Richland County on the Wayne County warrant. Bond in the case has been set at $2,500 cash.

In Hamilton County Circuit Court Monday, a judge found probable cause to bind a Wayne City man over to trial on charges he had unlawful sexual contact with a juvenile female relative.  35-year-old Randy E. Stilley has been charged with criminal sexual assault in both Hamilton and Wayne Counties.  Bond in the Hamilton County case is $7,500 cash – $5,000 in the Wayne County case.

Tanner Garrison is the winner of a Chicago Bears recliner from Rush Appliance in Fairfield in the Fairfield Retail Merchants Men on a Mission promotion.  Jesse Young is the winner of a fully stocked tackle box from Wayne White Propane and Sporting Goods.
