According to the Mt. Vernon Police Department, a 26 year-old man has died, following a shooting in Mt. Vernon on Friday night at 5:43 p.m. in the area of South 19th Street and Conger. His name has not been released at this time. He was transported to Crossroads Hospital in Mt. Vernon where he was later pronounced dead. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Mt. Vernon Police Department at 242-2131 or Jefferson County Crimestoppers at 242-8477. You do not have to identify yourself and may be eligible for a cash reward.

FCHS JV Scholastic 2017 Cumberland Recap

The Fairfield Community High School Junior Varsity Scholastic Team captured third place in the Cumberland Pirates Junior Varsity Scholastic Tournament.  FCHS went 3-2 on the day. Lex Gonzalez was named to the all-tournament team for being in the top eight during the morning rounds. FCHS defeated Cumberland, Neoga, and Edwards County. Their two losses were to Robinson and Newton.

The Flora High School Band, under the direction of Harry Penry, will entertain the large crowds attending this year’s IHSA Class 1A and 2A State Basketball Semifinals on Friday, March 10th at the Peoria Civic Center. They will perform during and between the four semifinal games that begin in mid-morning and continue until about 10 p.m. and then return home that same day.

A 16 year-old Carbondale teenager that was reported missing has been found safe. Taylor Charles was found safe and in good health in Olney, according to the Carbondale Police Department. Carbondale Police received a report on Tuesday at 10:50 a.m. about a report of a runaway and that Charles was last seen in the 1000 block of East Park Street in Carbondale around 10:45 a.m.

Illinois high school sports officials say they’re seeing fewer boys but more girls in competitive wrestling. Data from the Illinois High School Association show that 394 girls have appeared on wrestling rosters this season, an 11 percent increase over the 355 girls who wrestled last year.

81 year-old Kenneth Edward “Ed” Stokes of Crossville, died Saturday, January 21, at Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. He was a member of the Crossville United Methodist Church, and worked as a pumper in the oilfields around White County.

Survivors include cousins Thelma Jo (Duane) White, Harvalee (Byron) Taylor, Richard (Lynn) Carter, Paulette Smith, Sam B. (Pat) Carter, Brad (Judy) Carter, Royce (Becky) Carter, Gary (Terri) Carter, R. Larry (Ann) Roberts, Donna (Larry) Bell, Judy (Melvin) Cowling, William E. (Jeananne) Samuelson, Elaine (Jim) Monihan, Sharon Songer, Fred Sons, and Carol Sons.

Visitation and funeral services are set for Wednesday, January 25, at Cook Funeral Chapel in Carmi. Visitation is at 9 a.m. and funeral is at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Stokes Cemetery near Crossville.

Memorials may be made to the Crossville United Methodist Church. The Cook Funeral Chapel in Carmi is in charge of the arrangements.

Russell L. “Pete” Clark – Belle Rive

Russell L. “Pete” Clark, 84 of Belle Rive died Saturday, January 21, 2017 at his home. He worked as a fork lift operator for Caterpillar Tractor in Peoria, IL for 30 years. He is also a U.S. Army Veteran having served during the Korean War, 1952-1954 at the Greenland Thulee Air Force Base.

Survivors include his wife; Joan Clark. Two sons; Gene Russell (Tiffany Hope) Clark of Peoria, IL and David Lee (Angela Renee) Clark of Opdyke, IL. Two daughters; Deborah (Edward) Wilkerson of Belle Rive, IL and Donna Sue (Gene) Leffingwell of Opdyke, IL. Seven grandchildren and four step-grandchildren; Mike Wilkerson, Tim (Deb) Wilkerson, Eric Wilkerson, Caleb Burrechter, Andrea Burrechter, Levi Clark, Ryan Clark, Tiffany Wesselman, Dakota Church, Dillon Leffingwell and Cassy Leffingwell of Branson, MO. Four great grandchildren; Evan Wilkerson, Landon Wilkerson, Lily Wilkerson and Arriah Leffingwell. Two brothers; Frank Clark of Dahlgren, IL and Richard Clark of McLeansboro, IL. Funeral services for Pete Clark will be held Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at the Belle Rive Missionary Baptist Church with burial in the Flint-Belle Rive Cemetery with graveside military rites conducted by American Legion Post #141 of Mt. Vernon.

Visitation will be held Monday, January 23, 2017 from 6-8 p.m. at the Belle Rive Missionary Baptist Church. Memorials may be made to the Belle Rive Missionary Baptist Church and will be accepted at the church or Gholson Funeral Home.

BRUCE, PRAXTON D38-year-old Paxton D. Bruce of rural Wayne City has been jailed on charges he slashed two people with a knife and battered two others during an altercation early Sunday morning southwest of Keenes. Bruce is accused of slashing Daniel Stevenson of rural Belle Rive and slicing a finger on Stevenson’s wife Jessica.  Bruce is also accused of battering his sister, Peggy Rightenower and 24-year-old Cole Tatum of Wayne City. Bruce faces preliminary charges of attempted murder, four counts of aggravated battery and two counts of aggravated domestic battery.  He remains in the Wayne County jail pending the filing of charges and setting of bond.

Fairfield set a new record high temperature for Saturday, January 21 and tied the record for Sunday, January 22. On Saturday, the mercury rose to 73, breaking the old record high for the date of 68 set in 1986. On Sunday, we recorded a high of 65, tying the old record of 65 set in 1964.

The Fairfield Community High School Junior Varsity Scholastic team captured third place in the Cumberland Pirates JV Tournament Saturday.  Lex Gonzales was named to the all-tournament team for being in the top 8 during the morning rounds.

Illinois State Police are warning residents of a phone scam going around. Residents have been receiving calls that they are under criminal investigation and need to send $600 to avoid prosecution.  The scammers have been able to use a phone number that comes up on caller ID as being from the State Police. State police officials never solicit money on behalf of the department. If you receive one of these calls – hang up.

The Fairfield City Council meets Tuesday night with a light agenda.  Officials will discuss installing video surveillance cameras in the collector’s office.

80 year-old Phyllis Caldwell Hale of Clay City died  Saturday, January 21 at her home.

She graduated from Cisne High School with class of 1955. After graduation, she worked as a secretary at the Cisne Grade School for several years. She was a member of the Clay County Home Extension serving as President for many years; a lifetime member of Royal Neighbors of America, and a member of the Cisne Christian Church.  She served on the Stanford Township Election Board for many years.

Phyllis is survived by her husband Gilbert Dean Hale of Clay City; one son Joey (Kristin) Hale of Dupo, Illinois and two grandchildren Nicole and Jesse.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 25, at Hosselton Funeral Home.  Burial will be in Cisne Cemetery.  Visitation will be 6pm – 8pm Tuesday, January 24 at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Clay County Animal Rescue and Shelter or the donor’s choice and will be accepted at Hosselton Funeral Home.

bone85-year-old Fairfield resident, Sammie Darlene Bone, died at 10:25 am on Monday, January 23, 2017 at Way-fair Nursing Home in Fairfield, IL. She had been a waitress and a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband Wayne, one son Gary (Donna) Bone of Dale, Indiana, 3 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, one brother, Jerry (Karen) Joslin of Fairfield.

Funeral services for Sammie Bone will be at 1pm on Wednesday, January 25 at the Johnson and Vaughn Funeral Home in Fairfield with burial in the Koontz Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11am until the time of service at the Johnson & Vaughn Funeral Home in Fairfield.

William Heads, Jr. – Carmi

William Heads, Jr., 59 of Carmi, died at his home on January 20, 2017.

He is survived by brothers, Gary and Kelly Heads and sisters, Pam Heads and Connie (George) Edwards.

The Darmstadt, Indiana woman shot to death Monday morning is a native of Grayville.  Sherry Loehrlein, 52 is the former Sherry McCarty of Grayville. According to officials with the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Department, Mrs. Loehrlein was attacked by her husband, Clint at the family’s home a little after 7 o’clock Monday morning.  Officials with the Vanderburgh County Coroner’s office said the victim died of a gunshot wound to her upper back. The Loehrlein’s twin daughters, Cynthia and Nicole Loehrlein were also injured in the attack. Cynthia was shot multiple times and was stabbed. Nicole was shot in the arm and suffered non-life threatening injuries. Clint Loehrlein, an Evansville construction company executive, was hospitalized after he allegedly stabbed himself at deputies responded to the crime scene.  Charges against Clint Loehrlein are pending.

sullivan40-year-old Charla Beth Sullivan of Carmi has been sentenced to four years in prison for her role in the August, 2016 burglary of the Donna Matz home in Carmi. Sullivan and co-defendant Mark Keller took jewelry stolen from the Matz home and pawned it, investigators said. Keller was previously sentenced to 17 years in prison for his role in the heist. A third defendant, Michael Bassemier will be sentenced next Monday. The burglary happened while Donna Matz was attending the funeral of her husband.

The Edwards County Sheriff’s Department is accepting applications for the position of Deputy Sheriff to update their eligibility hiring list. Application packets can be picked up in the Sheriff’s office in Albion.

The U.S. Supreme Court will not hear an appeal challenging Illinois’ system for issuing permits for people to carry concealed weapons in public.  Three men sued state officials after they said a state review board denied their permit requests without offering an adequate explanation.

A new report shows that roughly 3,000 gambling terminals opened in Illinois last year, generating growing profits for some communities. There are currently four establishments in Fairfield with video gaming terminals. A total of 18 machines are up and running in Fairfield.

Illinois lawmakers are considering a proposal to tax sugary drinks. Senate Bill 9 would tax any drink that has five grams of sugar or more. The tax, if imposed, would bring in about $560 million a year for the state.

Corrie-LeeJeanette Corrie-Lee, age 79 died on January 23, 2017. She graduated East Richland High School in 1955, earned an associate’s degree in nursing from Wabash Valley College in 1979, and a BA of Nursing from Lindenwood College in 1985 at St. Charles, Missouri. Jeanette was an active member of the Wabash Presbyterian Church at Orio. She served three terms on its Session, taught a Sunday school class over 20 years, sang in the choir, and was one of the ladies that hand quilted quilts to earn money for missions. She worked 20 years as a nurse, volunteered for Hospice of S.E. Illinois for 15 years, and was also a member of the Homespun Quilt Club.

Survivors include daughters Beverly (Russ) Taylor of Larkspur, Colorado, Dee Medler of Evansville, Indiana, son Bill (Becky) Saltsgaver of St. Francisville, Illinois, and also her pet dog, Missy. She is survived by three sisters: Virginia (Earl) Stoltz, St. Francisville, Illinois, Floita Witte of Mineral Wells, Texas, and Genie (Kirk) Fifer of Olney, Illinois. Surviving grandchildren include Randy (Stephie) Medler, Allen (Amanda) Medler, Cori Medler, Adam Medler, Tesha Weiss, and Kolesha Riggs; nine great-grandchildren: Elizabeth, Vaida, Sam, Zeth, Rowyn, Grace, Emma, Michael, and William; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Jeanette Corrie-Lee will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Wabash Presbyterian Church at Orio with burial at Orio Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the time of service at the church.

Memorials may be made to the Mission Committee at the Wabash Presbyterian Church or Hospice of Southeastern Illinois, and envelopes will be provided at the service.

BRUCE, PRAXTON DA rural Wayne County, Ill. man arrested Sunday for slashing two individuals with a knife now faces charges of trying to hire someone to kill the alleged victims. Paxton D. Bruce, 38 of rural Wayne City has been formally charged with two Class-X felony counts of solicitation of murder for hire.  According to police reports, Bruce is accused of placing a phone call to an un-named individual seeking a “hit” on Daniel Stevenson and his wife Jessica of rural Keenes, Ill. In the early morning hours on Sunday, Bruce is accused of choking Jessica Stevens. As her husband attempted to intervene, Bruce is accused of slashing him with a knife and biting his thumb. He is also accused of slashing one of Jessica Stevenson’s thumbs. The alleged phone call to order a “hit” was made, police said, as his sister, Peggy Rightnowar of rural Keenes was driving him to a hospital for treatment of a hand injury he sustained by breaking out a car window.

Albion Mayor Steve McMahel is warning residents about solicitors going door to door asking folks if they want to switch their electric supplier from Ameren to another company. Mayor McMahel says that none of these solicitors have registered at city hall to solicit door to door.   If you are approached by any of these folks, ask to see their peddler’s permit and their identification.  If they cannot produce both, you are asked to call the police.

The Fairfield City Council voted Tuesday night to purchase a video surveillance system for the collector’s office. The move comes after a disagreement between the city and a customer over whether or not she paid her utility bill with cash. The city had no record of the payment. As many as 8 cameras will be installed at an estimated cost of $5,000.

Julie McGill at Perks2Former owner/manager of the Jemini Coffeehouse in Fairfield, Julie McGill, has been hired as the new Barista at the Frontier Perks Coffeehouse at Frontier Community College.  Located inside the Bobcat Den Fitness Center or old movie theater lobby, Frontier is excited to have Julie bring her expertise to Frontier Perks making espresso based drinks, lattes, cappuccinos, iced lattes, hot chocolate, and more.  Julie began her part-time duties on January 17, and is already planning improvements including promotions and special events coming soon.  Frontier Perks Coffeehouse is open Monday through Thursday, 7am-4:30pm, Monday and Wednesday nights from 5-8pm, and Friday from 7:30am-4:30pm.

Fairfield City Alderman Ed Prince updated the council Tuesday night about the operation of the local Humane Society Shelter. Prince reports that Amanda Cline is resigning. She will be replaced by Darrel Page, Prince said. Prince added that improvements are in the works for the shelter and that the shelter’s finances are in good shape.

A 17-year-old Rinard teen was injured Tuesday afternoon when the Pontiac Grand Am he was driving was hit from behind by a semi. The accident happened on Wayne County Road 2200 N. at 1100 E. The semi driver, Gregory Stover of Albion was not injured. The teen’s name was not released by State Police because of his age.

drewCarmi native Drue Pearce has joined the Washington D.C. firm of Holland and Hart as Director of Government Affairs in the Environmental, Energy and Natural Resources practice group. She will also maintain offices in Anchorage, Alaska. She is the daughter of Carol and the late H. Phil Pearce of Carmi. A graduate of Indiana University and the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government, Drue is also the former Alaska State Senate President.

Floyd Young – Fairfield

Floyd YoungFloyd Young, 69, of Fairfield died at his home on Sunday, January 22, 2017.  Floyd, who graduated from the New Hope School in 1961 and from FCHS in 1965, was a member of the Kings Chapel Church and the NRA.  He also was an U.S. Army Veteran serving in Vietnam and West Germany.  Floyd worked as a Prison Guard at the Statesville and Joliet Prisons and managed a gas station for a time.  After his return to Wayne County at the end of 1972, he worked at Square Post Buildings, Modern Drilling, Airtex Products, Eagle Supply and Kincaid Hardware.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 49 years Margot and his sons Bryan Young and fiancée Carol Defibaugh of Saint Louis, MO and Mark and wife Kim Young of Fairfield.  Also surviving are brothers Carl William (Bill) and wife Beverly Young, Earl and wife Barbara Young, Larry and wife Leah Young, a sister-in-law, Ruth-Ann Young, all of Fairfield, brother David and wife Susie Young of Highland, IL and sister Norma and husband Tom of Browns, IL, aunts Norene Young and Lulu Young, many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Floyd Young with full military honors will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at the Johnson and Vaughn Funeral Home in Fairfield with burial in Victory Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 – 7 on Friday, January 27 at the Johnson & Vaughn Funeral Home in Fairfield.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kings Chapel Church or to the Wayne County Chapter of the DAV Van transportation program and will be accepted at the Johnson & Vaughn Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Marjorie B. Nash – Albion

89-year-old former Albion resident, Marjorie B. Nash died at 1:53 a.m. Wednesday, January 25 at Richland Memorial Hospital in Olney.  She had been a clerk at Champion Laboratories; served as a bookkeeper for the Moose Lodge and was a member of the Women of the Moose.

Survivors include two sons, Randy Pipher of Olney and David and wife Donna Pipher of Mt. Erie; two daughters, Donna Campbell of Jupiter, Florida and Teresa Hatcher of Olney; three step-daughters, Cindy and wife Dick Lowe of Lincoln, Ill., Lisa and husband Rick Etheridge of Albion and Shelia and husband Sam Smith of Albion; three brothers, Harold Farmer of Griffith, Ind., Vernon Farmer of Texas and Dean Farmer of Arizona; a sister, Roberta Harris of Browns; 17 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services for Marjorie B. Nash will be 11 a.m. Friday, February 3 at Graceland Cemetery in Albion.

There will be no visitation. Those attending the service should go directly to the cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and will be accepted at Nale’s Funeral Home in Albion, which is in charge of all the arrangements.

The Illinois Senate adjourned Wednesday without voting on a “Grand Budget Compromise”.  The compromise includes an increase in the income tax and an “opportunity tax” on employers, based upon their annual payroll. The Senate is expected to return today to reconsider the issue. The state has been without a budget for two years.

Albion mayor Steve McMahel is warning residents about door-to-door solicitors asking residents if they want to change their electrical supplier from Ameren to a different company. The mayor said these solicitors have not obtained a peddler’s permit and have no authority to solicit residents for anything.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has tallied up the 2016-2017 Whitetail Deer harvest numbers. Hunters in Illinois bagged a preliminary total of 144,150 deer. That’s down from the previous year’s total of 155,229. In Wayne County, hunters bagged 2,522 deer during the fall and early winter seasons.

PrinceJohn Thomas Prince, 75 of Enfield died at Deaconess Hospital on Thursday morning, January 26, 2017.  Mr. Prince was a lifelong farmer and attended Ashland Christian Church.

He loved and admired his family. They were the purpose of his life.  Tom loved early morning road trips around the area farm grounds. He would survey  with wonder, pleasure, and amazement at the progress of the seasonable crops. Farming was his life and he loved his life. Tom attended Ashland Christian Church.

He is survived by his wife Janice; a son, Randy Prince (Noelle Bourisaw) of Decatur, daughter, Carmen (Kenneth) Rockett of Carmi, grandchildren, Leigh Prince and fiancé, Brian Luerman of Louisville, KY and Jackson John-Robert Prince (Leah Mayotte) of Boulder, CO, and sister Edna Pauline York of Silvas, IL.

Funeral services for John Thomas Prince will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, January 29, 2017 at Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Enfield, with burial in Enfield Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Enfield.

She is survived by her husband: Glen Rosenberger of Flora; children: Michael Ray Rosenberger of Barnhill, Ronald Lee (Deb) Rosenberger of Flora, and Mary Ann (Michael) Brown of Louisville; daughter-in-law: Donna of St. Charles; eight grandchildren: Michelle Lee DeRaedt, Brandi Lee DeRaedt, Cory Glen Rosenberger, Lauren Ray Webb, Courtney Ann Monnahan, Travis Lee Rosenberger, Randi Allison Brantner, and Samantha Ann Tolliver; twelve great-grandchildren; brother: Richard Albert (Ruth) Cooper II of Flora; sister: Marjorie (John Sr.) Barnett of Lawrenceville; brother-in-law: Charlie King of Flora; along with a number of nieces and nephews.

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is asking the court to stop pay for state workers until lawmakers and Governor Bruce Rauner approve a spending plan.  The motion filed in St. Clair County Circuit Court seeks to dissolve a preliminary injunction which allowed state workers to be paid during the budget impasse. If approved by the court, State Comptroller Susana Mendoza’s power to issue paychecks to state employees would end on February 28.

christopher swango38-year-old Christopher Lee Swango of Carmi has been sentenced to 4 years in prison for theft and a concurrent four years for possession of a controlled substance.  Swango has also been ordered to pay $1,117 in fines, fees, court costs and restitution to the victim in the case.  He will also have to serve another year of parole when he gets out of jail. Swango remains in the White County jail at Carmi, pending transfer to a state prison.

Clay County Hospital has donated $3,000 towards the purchase of a helmet concussion monitoring system for the Flora High School football team.  Sensors in the helmet send a notification to a device on the sidelines should a player’s head impact or sequence of impacts exceeds a certain threshold. Total cost for the system is $6,600.

The Illinois Poison Center has issued a report that shows the number of teens abusing medications like Xanax and Valium has increased dramatically in the last several years.  The same report shows the number of teens abusing synthetic marijuana has dropped.

Peoples National Bank has established an educational scholarship that assists local high school graduates in continuing their education at a university, college, trade or vocational school.  Applications for the $500 scholarship are available in your local high school guidance office or at Peoples National bank.

Margaret EllisMargaret Ruth Ellis, 85, of Fairfield passed away at 3:55PM on January 26, at Way-Fair Nursing Home in Fairfield.  She had retired from Fairfield National Bank in 1995 where she had worked for 28 years. She was a member of the Ellen Moore Methodist Church in Fairfield for over 60 years.

Margaret is survived by her husband Glen of Fairfield.  Daughters- Glenda (Bruce) Bennett of Marion, and Pam (Gary) Caudle of Fairfield.  Son-Jerry (Sharon) Ellis of Statesville, NC.  4 Grandchildren- Bruce JR. (Michelle) Bennett of Chatham IL, Amy (Mark) Buttrum of Ofallon, MO, Crystal Ellis of Fairfield, and Jimmy Ellis of West Salem.  9 Great Grandchildren- Caleb, McKenzie, Trish, Matthew, Tiffany, Lucas, Rebecca, Carina, and Adelyn.  1 Great-Great- Granddaughter.  Sisters- Helen Chalcraft of Ellery, and Ethel Powel of Mt. Erie.  Sister-in-Law Kaye Smerdon of West Salem.   Several Nieces and Nephews.  Several Step Grandchildren and Step Great Grandchildren.

Funeral Services for Margaret Ruth Ellis will be at 11AM Monday January 30 at Johnson and Vaughn Funeral Home with burial in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-7PM Saturday January 28 at Johnson and Vaughn Funeral Home

Memorials may be made to Ellen Moore Methodist Church or Celtic Hospice and will be accepted at Johnson and Vaughn Funeral Home in Fairfield.
