Fairfield’s annual Veterans Day Parade is this Saturday, November 5 at 2 p.m.  Lineup for the parade will be on North First street and will take the same route as other parades in Fairfield.  Veterans Day activities will begin at 1pm at Freedom Park where Elizabeth Gonzales will sing the National anthem followed by the FCHS show Choir singing several patriotic numbers.  The Roasted Chestnuts will then take the stage and play until parade time.  The St. Edwards Catholic Church will again have a Veterans Breakfast.  Veterans should reserve their spot at the breakfast by calling Cathy Zurliene at 599-2319.  After the parade, all parade participants are invited to a meal at the Fairfield Elks Lodge.  The meal is being sponsored by FNB and the Elks Club.

Fairfield Memorial Hospital’s new Urgent Care, will open today.  Urgent Care will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends. There is no need for an appointment, as patients can simply walk-in and register to be seen.

42-year-old, Gary Perkins of Carmi called the White County Sherriff’s Department Sunday afternoon to complain that a Donovan Overturf had been harassing him.  Perkins is a live in Boyfriend of Overturf’s mother.  At approximately 4:40pm Deputies arrived on scene to speak with Perkins.  After speaking with Perkins about his complaint, he was advised that he was wanted on warrant out of Williamson County for Aggravated Fleeing and eluding.  Perkins is being held pending the posting of $5,000 cash bond.

On Saturday morning White County Deputies responded to the Maxine Howell residence.  Howell, 99, told deputies she noticed someone had kicked in the back door to her house.  Taken in the heist was a tan colored fireproof safe approximately 12” by 8” by 6”, and two gold rings; one with pearls and diamond chips.

There will be a scheduled power outage in Fairfield Wednesday afternoon.  Power will be off starting at 1pm Wednesday near the FCC new baseball field.  Businesses affected will be The Five Brothers restaurant, the Briarwood Inn and the Bobcat Den. The City electric department will be relocating some lines and expect the outage to last 4 hours.


Delorah A. Broster, Fairfield

100-year-old Fairfield resident Delorah A. Broster died Sunday evening at Way-Fair Nursing and Rehab Center in Fairfield. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Fairfield.

She is survived by her Sister Wanda Triggs of Fairfield, 3 nephews, Fred (Raelene) Triggs of Geff, Tim Triggs, and Jim Triggs both of Fairfield, and a niece Leah (Larry) Young of Fairfield.  Several great nieces and nephews also survive.

Graveside services for Delorah Broster will be at 1pm on Saturday Nov. 5th at the Oak Grove Cemetary in Grayville.  Friends may call from 10am – noon on Saturday at the Nales Funeral Home in Fairfield.

George Leinard, Mill Shoals

George Leinard79-year-old Mill Shoals Resident George Leinard died Saturday October 15, at the Deaconess Hospice Care Center in Evansville.  George was a Veteran of the US Air Force and a salesman for pest control at the McCloud Corporation in St. Louis.

Survivors include 2 sons; Jeff Leinard of Mill Shoals and Joe Leinard of Plymout, Illinois; and 1 daughter Melissa Leinard of Chicago.  5 grandchildren and 3 greatgrandchildren also survive.

A memorial service for George Leinard will be at 2pm Saturday Nov. 5th at the First General Baptist Church.  The Nales Funeral Home in Fairfield is in Charge of all arrangements.

Josephine Martin, 95, of Carmi, passed away at 11:30 a.m., Monday, October 31, at the Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro.  She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church in Carmi.

Josephine is survived by two daughters, Bonnie Gay and Lois Koontz both of Carmi; a sister, Wilma Peach, of Antlers, OK; 5 grandchildren, Martin (Patty) Koontz, Mark (Katrina) Koontz, Lisa (Mike) Hetzel, Scott Ready and Derek (Kona) Ready; 6 great-grandchildren, Matt (Andrea) Hetzel, Alex (Jasmine) Hetzel, Keely Koontz, Sheena Ready, Kyle (Sara) Koontz, and Keegan (Kristin) Ready; 2 great-great-grandchildren, Preston Ready and Abby Koontz.

Funeral services for Josephine Martin, will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, November 3, at the Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Fairfield. Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 3, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the Campbell Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made in Josephine’s memory to Campbell Funeral Home to help assist with funeral expenses or the First Baptist Church in Carmi. Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi is in charge of arrangements.

Dale Laverne Cullison, Albion

Cullison DaleDale Laverne Cullison, age 81 of Albion, passed away on October 31, at Oakview Heights Continuous Care and Rehabilitation in Mt. Carmel.  He was a Veteran who served his country during peace time and was stationed in Germany.

He is survived by one sister, Lenore Beadles of Ellery, IL, one step daughter, Lisa Dunkel of Albion, one step son, Kevin (Karen) Browning of Newburgh, IN, two step-grandchildren: Cami (Marty) Tennes of Mt. Carmel, IL and Caitlin Dunkel of Albion, one step-great grandson, Otto and several nieces and nephews.

Dale will be laid to rest at a Graveside Service at 11AM on Saturday, November 5, at Samaria Baptist Cemetery, ( west and north of Albion) with Military Honors.

Memorials are encouraged to the Samaria Baptist Cemetery Fund in Dale’s memory.

Kevin D Wise was sentenced to 5 and a half years in prison for Aggravated battery of a police officer and Aggravated Intimidation in Edwards County Circuit court.   Wise was arrested last month charged with battering Albion police officer Sean Sager, violating an order of protection and aggravated assault and domestic battery.  He had been held in the White County Jail under $50,000 bond.  Wise will also have to pay all mandatory fines and court cost, plus serve two years parole.

The Illinois State Police is investigating the death of Beth A. Pheasant, 37, of Christopher. Christopher police officers responded to the Pheasant residence on the night of October 31, after receiving a 911 call.  The victim appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound and was later pronounced dead at the scene by Franklin County Coroner Marty Leffler. The investigation resulted in the arrest of the victim’s spouse, Brian D. Pheasant, 43.  He has been charged with murder and is currently being held in the Franklin County jail pending a first court appearance.

Ethan Taylor plead guilty in Edwards County Circuit court Monday to a Class 3 Felony charge of being a felon in possession of a weapon.  In exchange for his guilty plea, a Class A misdemeanor of Speeding and Class 3 Felony charge of possession of Methamphetamine were dropped.  Taylor was sentenced to 4 years in the department of corrections plus 1 year of parole plus he was fined $2000.

Monday morning in White County Court, 29 year old Justin Neaveill of Evansville, Indiana pled guilty on one charge of possession of a stolen or converted vehicle, according to States’ Attorney Denton Aud.  Neaveill was sentenced to five years in Department of Corrections custody, and will be under mandatory supervised release for two years following incarceration.  Neaveill was arrested by Carmi Police on July 16th.

Mt. Carmel Police arrested 37 year old David W. Rumade of Albion after he was stopped for a traffic violation in the 300 block of W. 3rd Street.  During the traffic stop it was discovered that Rumade was driving on a suspended license. When officer’s arrested Rumade they discovered an uncased 9mm handgun in the door of the vehicle.  Rumade did not have a concealed carry permit nor did he have a FOID card.  Rumade was arrested and transported to the Wabash County Jail where he was charged aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, driving while suspended, expired registration, and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Grider, 76, of Carmi, and formerly of Crossville, passed away on Tuesday evening November 1, at the Deaconess Hospital in Evansville.  Mr. Grider owned and operated Bob’s Cycle Sales in Crossville for 40 years before his retirement.  He served with the U.S. Marine Corp. Reserves.  Bob was a member of the Crossville Fire Dept. and served as Fire Chief for 25 years.

He is survived by his wife, Janet; son, Bobby (Joyce) Grider of Carmi; daughters, Rebecca (Brian) Thomason of Manhatten, KS and Beth (Scott) Tidwell of Diamond, IL; six grandchildren, Sarah (Angel), Jessica (Cory),  Drew, Chelsea, Sonja & Jacob; great-grandson, Brexton; and brother, Don Norton of Henderson, NV.

Funeral services for Robert J. Grider will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, November 4, at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Carmi.  Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, November 3, at the funeral home.  Burial will be in White County Memorial Gardens.

Estell Stewart, Weston, WV

Estell StewartEstell Stewart, 91, of Weston, WV, passed away Wednesday, November 2, in Colonial Place of Elkins, WV.  He worked on farms with his father from childhood to young adulthood before starting an Oil & Gas business from Illinois to West Virginia, and finally ending with his retirement from being owner and operator of Allegheny Tank Services of Weston. He was a 65 year member of the Grand Masonic Lodge # 272 AF & A of Carmi, IL.

Survivors include children Joyce (Norman) Rohr of Buckhannon, WV, Marcia (Rick) Stewart-Kizer of Springboro, OH, and Marvin (Judith) Stewart of Weston; four grandchildren Amy Queen, Cary Smith, Rebecca Donaldson and Emmalee Kemper; five great grandchildren Maggie and Grace Queen, Colton and Coby Smith and Brody Donaldson; brothers Milton Stewart of Sun Prairie, WI, and Eugene Stewart of Carmi; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation and funeral for Estell Stewart are Saturday, November 5, at Cook Funeral Chapel in Carmi. Visitation is at noon and funeral is at 2:00 p.m. with Chaplain Mike Fields officiating. Burial will be in Kuykendall Cemetery of White County, IL.


John A. “Big John” McBride, Xenia

John McBrideJohn A. “Big John” McBride, 70, of Xenia, passed away at 4:15pm Tuesday, November 1, at his residence.  John was a farmer.

John was born February 12, 1946 in Orchard Township in Wayne County, IL to Roscoe and Wreatha (Miley) McBride. He married Carol McManaway in 1987.

He enjoyed fishing, bird hunting, golf, and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a wonderful father, grandfather and great grandfather.

John is survived by two sons Timothy (Kammie) McBride of Xenia, and Travis Forth of Cisne; one sister Shirley (and the late George) Burgess of Xenia, and one brother-in-law Olaf Burgess of Mississipi and six grandchildren Alexa, Owen, Olivia, Eva, Kayle, and Corrinna and three great grandchildren Kamryn, Kayson, and Rayvn. He is also survived by cherished friends Larry, Charlie, and Wayne.

Preceding him in death were his parents, sister Betty Burgess and great grandson Kamden.

A Celebration of Life will be at noon Saturday, November 12, 2016 at Dagg’s Auction Barn at Orchardville. Disposition of John’s ashes will be private at the family farm which he loved.

Memorials may be given to the donor’s choice and will be accepted at Hosselton Funeral Home.

Tuesday afternoon White County Sheriff Doug Maier and another deputy went to a home on Stewart Street in Carmi, to serve an arrest warrant on, 52-year-old. Billy D Morrill.  He was wanted on two warrants for unlawful violation of an order of protection.  One warrant carried a cash bond of $1,500 and the other carried a cash bond of $2,000.  Morrill was taken to the White County Jail pending the posting of bond.

A 31-year-old Mt. Vernon man scheduled to appear in court Tuesday on a DUI conviction reportedly arrived in court under the influence of alcohol. James K. Scroggins recently pleaded guilty to driving under the influence on March 22 when he crashed into the Garden Glen Apartments in Mt. Vernon resulting in an explosion and fire.  On Tuesday, Scroggins was ordered to serve 162 days in jail for contempt of court after a breathalyzer test showed his blood alcohol level at .086, exceeding the legal level of intoxication. He was in court Tuesday for a status hearing leading up to his sentencing on Class 4 felony aggravated DUI.

FCHS fall awards night will be held Thursday November 10th at Fairfield High School starting at 6:00. Awards will be given in Cheer, Cross Country, Girls Tennis, Golf, Volleyball, and Football. Activities will start in the high school gym at 6:00 p.m.  The Winter sports meetings will take place following the fall awards on Thursday November 10th at approximately 6:45 to 7:00 for athletes and parents in the sports of basketball, wrestling, and cheer. Rules and schedules will be reviewed and this will be an opportunity to take care of any remaining paperwork for the district.

Two people died in a rollover crash on Interstate 57 early Wednesday morning in Jefferson County.  It happened around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday near mile post 85. Illinois State Police said the driver of a 2010 Infiniti QX56 SUV was headed north when he saw a deer and swerved to avoid it.  The SUV hit guardrails on both sides of the interstate, flipping multiple times before coming to rest in the median against the southbound guardrail.  Two passengers died from their injuries. Police identified the victims as Kimberly Martin, 33, and Sherrie Webber, 34, both of Knoxville, Tenn.  Another passenger from Maryville, Tenn. was flown to a regional hospital for treatment, while two others, including the driver, suffered non-life threatening injuries.

City police got a surprise on Wednesday afternoon when they search the Car of 44-year-old, John E Luther, of Fairfield.  Officers had stopped Luther at Epworth and West Curry for no visible registration, and found he was driving suspended.  Before the vehicle was towed from the scene an inventory was taken and inside the trunk police found five uncased rifles and shotguns.  A computer check also showed that Luther had his FOID card revoked due to a felony conviction.  Luther was lodged in the Wayne County Jail pending the setting of bond on charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon as well as additional traffic charges.

After months of discussion and negotiations, the North Clay Board of Education Wednesday approved an intergovernmental agreement with the North Clay Park Board for development of a baseball diamond on the North Clay school grounds.  The vote to approve a 25-year agreement was 7-0. The agreement was effective immediately.  The school district has been paying annually to utilize the park district ball diamond in Louisville for games.  Anthony Dawkins of the Park District hopes to start the dirt work on the field before winter.

City police were called to the Wal-Mart Supercenter early Friday morning about an unresponsive male in the restroom.  When they arrived officers were told that store associates had been trying to get the man’s attention for over an hour.  Upon entering the stall officers found 21-year-old Reno E. Casanova of Fairfield, fully clothed and slouched over in the stall.  Officers also found two cans of industrial strength Duster Aerosol.  Casanova was arrested for Criminal Trespass, Retail theft less than $300, and use of an intoxicating compound.  He was taken to the Wayne County Jail with bail set at $150.

Cody Jones, 35 of Farina face charges in Marion, Fayette and Effingham Counties after a crime spree on Tuesday night.  Jones is currently being held in the Effingham County Jail on preliminary charges of four counts of motor vehicle theft, two counts of home invasion, DUI-drugs, the use of a stolen firearm in the commission of an offense as well as minor traffic offenses.  Illinois State Police are coordinating the entire investigation.  State police say some of the vehicles stolen were unlocked with their keys left inside. They encourage residents to secure their valuables to help prevent similar occurrences.

Don’t forget to set your clocks back one hour before going to bed tomorrow night as Daylight Saving Time officially ends at 2:00am on Sunday.  It’s also a good time for everyone to change the batteries in all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and to make sure that the devices are working correctly.  Daylight Savings Time Returns on March 12th of 2017.

Bettie L. Murray, Albion

90 year-old Bettie L. Murray of Albion died at 3:25 p.m., November 3, at her residence. She was a waitress and homemaker. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church, Moose Lodge, and the Eastern Star.

Survivors include a son, Mike Murray of Eldorado, IL; one daughter, Teresa Malone of Bone Gap, IL; along with 20 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Bettie L. Murray will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 8 at the First Baptist Church in Albion. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday, November 7, at Nale’s Funeral Home in Albion.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Betty GarrisonBetty M. Garrison, age 87, of Flora, passed away on Thursday afternoon, November 3, at Clay County Hospital in Flora.

Betty is survived by 3 sons: Herb Brown (wife Sue) of Xenia, Jerry Brown of Flora, and Bruce Brown (wife Barbara) of Flora; 2 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service for Betty Garrison will be 2 p.m. Sunday, November 6, at the Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora.  Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.  Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Frank & Bright Funeral Home.

Memorial donations in Betty’s memory may be given to CCMA Food Pantry or the Gary Bright Memorial Fund and they will be accepted at the funeral home.

Early Friday morning Fairfield City police saw Logan G. Walker, 24, of Mt. Vernon walking near North East 3rd street.  The officer confirmed that Walker had a valid arrest warrant out of Vanderburgh County Indiana for theft.  Walker was taken into custody and lodged in the Wayne County Jail pending $2,000 bond or extradition on the Indiana warrant.

Carmi City Police pulled over Daniel K. Poshard, 24, of Carmi early Friday morning at Main and Partridge Streets.   A computer check revealed that Poshard driver’s license was revoked.  He was taken to the White County Jail where bail was set at $150.  Thursday afternoon, Carmi Police officers arrested 27 year old Nickolas Hays of Carmi on two counts of aggravated battery after an incident at the Carmi Public Library.  Hays was taken into custody at 4 pm at the Library and transported to the White County Jail, where he is being held without bond pending a court hearing.

A rental van from Enterprise Rental was destroyed by fire Friday morning while driving down I-57 at the 106 mile marker near the Route 161 interchange.  Kell Fire Chief Lonnie McDaneld says the cause of the fire has not been determined. The fire was bad enough the department was not able to determine the vehicle make or model.  The fire call came in at 7:14 Friday morning. Firemen were on the scene for about two hours. There were no injuries.

Thursday evening City police responded to the 200 block of West Delaware in reference to two young men fighting.  On arrival officers found two juveniles, aged 13 and 16, that had been fighting.  There were no injuries and no charges were requested but the officer determined the 13-year-old had consumed alcohol and took him into custody.  He was transported to the Fairfield City police station and released to his parents pending a court appearance on a charge of illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor.

68 year-old Linda Lee Rhodes of Fairfield passed away at 2:20 p.m., Friday, November 4 at Way-Fair Nursing Home. She had been a cook and a factory worker.

Linda is survived by three sons: Brent (Tonya) Ellis of Fairfield, Ryan Trueblood of Fairfield, and Corey Trueblood of Evansville, IN. A brother, Gary Adler of Herrin, IL; a sister, Cindy Bell of Forest, IL.  Four grandchildren also survive.

Per Linda’s wishes, her body will be cremated and no formal services will be held.

The Fairfield City Council will meet Tuesday night at 6 under a light agenda. Under routine business, the council will discuss the Payment Services Network, an ordinance with Risk Management Insurance, and disposition options for the 1982 fire truck at the Fairfield Fire Department.

The Courtyard in Fairfield will be having their grand opening today from 2-7 p.m. There will be refreshments from Amy’s Sweet Gallery and coffee samples from Phillipstown Roasters. Those who purchase an item, can register to win a door prize. The Courtyard is located at 312 East Main in Fairfield, across from the Wayne County Courthouse.

Chris Vallillo, a Road Scholar with the Illinois Humanities Council, will be performing his nationally acclaimed program, “Abraham Lincoln in Song”, at the First Christian Church in Carmi on Monday, November 14 at 7 p.m. This is a presentation from the White County Historical Society, and will be held following the society’s annual fall dinner. The musical event is free and open to the public.

NCOE Lady Cardinals are heading to state in Class 1A volleyball, as they defeated Clay City Saturday afternoon at Rend Lake in two games: 25-17, 25-20. They will travel to Normal to face Sciota (West Prairie) on Friday, November 11 at 9 a.m. in Redbird Arena. Tickets for the 1A State Volleyball Sessions for Friday and Saturday will go on sale Monday morning at 9 am at the high school office in Norris City.

63 year-old Donald Verdeyen of Altamont has died, following an early Saturday morning crash at 4:44 a.m. on U.S. Highway 40 in Effingham County. State Police say preliminary investigative details indicate Verdeyen was eastbound on U.S. 40 two miles west of Interstate 57 in the ‘S’ curves when he left the roadway. His SUV continued traveling east along the north ditch of U.S. 40 before coming to a stop. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Effingham County Coroner Duane Guffey at 5:05 Saturday morning.

Today marks the 11th year anniversary of the deadly Evansville, Indiana tornado. The twister touched down during the early morning hours on November 6, 2005 and left a 41 mile path of destruction, killing 25 people. The majority of deaths occurred at the Eastbrook mobile home park, just south of I-164 (now I-69) in Evansville with 20 fatalities. The tornado had peak winds of 200 mph and had an average path width of 275 yards. At least 500 buildings/homes were destroyed or severely damaged.

Carroll Freeland obit pic73 year-old Sims resident, Carroll Freeland, died at 11:15pm, Thursday, Nov. 3rd, at the Sitemen Cancer Center in St. Louis.  He had been a farmer. After retirement, he participated in the operation of his family-owned strawberry and vegetable farm.  Carroll was a 14 year member of the Sims Village board.  His hobbies included hunting, fishing and watching NSU Womens College Basketball.  He was of Baptist faith.

He is survived by his wife, Donna; two daughters Tammy (Wayne) Thomason of Sims, and LeAnn (John) Freeland-Curry of Coral Gables, FL.; one son Jimmy of Sims; three  sisters Aileen MacDonald of Nevada, Mary Helen (Norman) Wells of Iowa and Betty (Gene) Guinn of Virginia; mother-in-law Marian Weedman of Fairfield; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, Nov. 9th from 5-7 p.m. at Johnson and Vaughn funeral home in Fairfield. Per Carroll’s wishes, the body will be cremated with internment of ashes at a later date.

The next hearing in the Chapter 11 Bankruptcy proceedings of Airtex Products and Champion Laboratories is set for Tuesday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware. Several local businesses have filed claims against UCI International – the parent company of Airtex and Champ.  UCI owes the City of Fairfield over $60,000; Gordy’s Machine and Tools more than $68,000 and the Career Development Center more than $6,500. According to court filings, claims filed in the proceedings amount to $3.9 million. The total amount of payment allowed so far amounts to only $815,834.

Four years after the State of Illinois legalized video gambling, wagering in the state continues to surge.  Locally, there are four establishments operating video gambling terminals with 18 machines. For the month of September, the City of Fairfield’s share of tax on wagering amounted to $2,580. The State of Illinois took $12,901. More than $719,000 was wagered with winnings totaling $668,000.

The Secret Santa Committee, based out of the Fairfield Cumberland Presbyterian Church will be kicking off the Christmas season with a bake sale this Saturday at Kincaids in Fairfield.  The Christmas tree will be up and filled with tags so that the community can get a head start on Christmas shopping. All gifts need to be wrapped and returned to Kincaids no later than Dec. 12.

murphySentencing is set this Wednesday for a Mt. Vernon man found guilty of first-degree murder and aggravated arson in the death of Tamara Malin of Mt. Vernon. 27-year-old Steven Murphy was arrested on the arson charge shortly after the June 28, 2015 fire.
