66-year-old Bone Gap resident, Karen Rankin Bunting died at 6:20 a.m. Monday, October 19 at her home. She had been a CNA at Rest Haven Manor and had worked at Champion Laboratories.
Survivors include a daughter, Tonya (Kenny) Angel of Bone Gap; four brothers, Dennis (Debbie) Rankin of Grayville, Michael Rankin of Grayville, Timothy (Cathy) Rankin and Patrick (Pam) Rankin, all of Grayville; a sister, Kathy Rankin of Ellery; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

86-year-old Ridgway resident, Leroy Venters died on October 19, 2015 in the St. Mary’s Medical Center in Evansville, IN. A native of Mill Shoals, he worked as a lineman, in sawmills and oil fields and drove a semi. He delivered ice many years ago, worked in Ridgway as a young man at Aydt Brothers Store starting out as a delivery and stock man, working his way up to being a butcher. He had also worked for Charlie Mitchell’s Ford Tractor dealership for 14 years. He retired from Peabody Eagle #2 mine in Shawneetown at the age of 64.
Survivors include his wife Joan; 2 children; Danny (Pam) Venters and Roberta Funkhouser; 5 grandchildren: Treva Bandy, Stephanie (Jeff) Disney, Brent (Brigit) Venters, Chris (Megan) Funkhouser, and Chad (Erin) Venters; 8 great grandchildren; a brother, Bill (Ruth) Venters, and sisters Mary (Boone) Dagley, Jean (Bob) Taylor and Ann Sarks along with many nieces, nephews and extended family.

An Arkansas man who stopped along Interstate-64 in rural Wayne County, Ill. to urinate has been jailed on drug and gun charges. Randy C. Myers, 30 of Petersburg, Arkansas was taken into custody shortly before midnight Tuesday night on I-64 at the Ill. Rt. 242 exit. According to a Wayne County Sheriff’s Department report, a deputy pulled in behind Myers’ stopped Ford pickup truck and saw him urinating. Gaining consent to search his truck, the deputy found four loaded handguns and four containers of suspected marijuana. Police said Myers had a Ruger handgun under the driver’s seat, a Remington rifle behind the driver’s seat, a Remington shotgun behind the driver’s seat and a Glock handgun in bed of his truck. All of the weapons were loaded, police said. Police recovered three plastic bags and one glass container of suspected marijuana in the truck. The total weight was 34 grams, police said. Myers was booked at the Wayne County jail in Fairfield on preliminary charges of unlawful use of a deadly weapon and possession of more than 30 but less than 500 grams of marijuana.

If you do business with the State of Illinois, you are probably anxiously waiting on payment for your goods and services. The budget impasse has created a huge backlog of unpaid bills for the state. Locally, Wayne-White Electric reports 21 separate state accounts are now 90 days overdue. The larger accounts include the Illinois State Police Post west of Carmi, Dolan Lake in Hamilton County and Sam Dale Lake near Johnsonville. CEO Daryl Donjon says it is in the long term interest of Wayne-White members not to disconnect the accounts. He anticipates full payment once the budget impasse is resolved.
A House committee Tuesday advanced a bill to provide money due to local governments from gaming revenue and motor fuel taxes. The committee approved the measure on a partisan vote with Democrats supporting it and Republicans opposing it. The bill advanced to the House floor, but did not get a final vote. The House won’t be back in session until Nov. 10.
Thomas S. Gross, 39 of Wayne City has been arrested on charges he was in possession of a counterfeit drug – bath salts and drug paraphernalia. Wayne County police made the arrest.
Fairfield Memorial Hospital recently hosted a Region 5 Emergency Medical Services for Children workshop. The workshop was designed to enhance the pediatric care provided in area Emergency Departments. Nearly 50 hospital professionals attended the event.

Lula M. Cox, 85 of Carmi, passed away Wednesday October 21, 2015 at Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. Lula had worked as a sales clerk at Savmor and Dela Dee Fashions.
She is survived by her daughters, Rosa Brown of Centerville, Virginia (Don) Jordan of Carmi and Nora (Dennis) Rupp of Defiance, MO; her son, Donald E. (Martha) Cox of Mt. Vernon, IN; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

An Evansville man has been found guilty of being in possession of a stolen vehicle in White County. Following a two-day trial in White County Circuit Court at Carmi, 41-year-old Martin A. Ritch was found guilty. Sentencing in the case has been set for December 21. Carmi City Police arrested Ritch at the Carmi Wal-Mart.

Two Carmi residents have been jailed on charges they were in possession of meth and hypodermic syringes. Dawn D. Tracy, 42 and David Bertram, 36 face charges of being in possession of meth and syringes. Carmi City Police made the arrest.
The Illinois State Museum system is in danger of losing its national accreditation after Governor Bruce Rauner closed a number of museums due to the state budget impasse. The American Alliance of Museum’s Accreditation Commission has voted 7 – 0 to place Illinois’ museum system on probation.

George W. Luthe, 60, of Bloomington died at 8:02 a.m. on Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at his residence. He worked for the last 15 years in the insurance business where he most recently started his own insurance re-inspection business. He received his Associate Degree in Agriculture Mechanics from Wabash Valley Jr. College and his Bachelors Degree in Agriculture Business Economics from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. After college he worked in seed production, including agriculture training in the Ukraine. He made numerous trips to the Dominican Republic and Niagara through his church.
Surviving are his wife, Julie Luthe of Bloomington; a daughter, Lacey (Michael) Dieser of Oswego; a son, Jon (Lindsay) Luthe of Downs; siblings, Roberta Brown of Indianapolis, IN, James (Sue) Luthe of Lawrenceville, Mike (Connie) Luthe of West Salem, Margaret Jane (Ken) Bringa of Waukesha, WI, and Robbin (Gary) Eckel of Noble; he was a doting grandfather to his four grandchildren, Jackson and MacKenzie Dieser, Avery Moody and Jens Luthe; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Fairfield, Ill. man has been jailed on charges he severely beat his seven-week-old daughter. 28-year-old Shannon L. Cone was taken into custody Thursday on preliminary charges of aggravated domestic battery and child endangerment. The case came to light last Friday when Fairfield City Police received a call from the emergency room at Fairfield Memorial Hospital that an infant had been brought in for treatment of multiple bruises. City Police said Cone’s sister had been babysitting the child, noticed the injuries and took her to the hospital. After interviews with authorities, Cone was taken into custody Thursday afternoon and lodged in the Wayne County jail. The child has was treated at the hospital and released to relatives. Officials with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services are also involved in the investigation.
A Fairfield man has been jailed on charges he sexually assaulted a local woman. Jerry W. Powell, 24 has been jailed on a felony charge of criminal sexual assault. According to Fairfield City Police, the alleged sexual assault happened in the early morning hours of Sunday, October 18 at a home in the 900 block of Leroy Avenue in Fairfield. The alleged victim was taken to Fairfield Memorial Hospital where she was treated and released. Police investigated the case and took Powell into custody on Wednesday at a home in the 600 block of Laurel Street in Fairfield. Powell remains in the Wayne County jail pending the filing of formal charges and setting of bond.
Officials with the Illinois EMA say they are continuing their search for a missing steel canister that contains radioactive material. The device has been missing since at least last Friday. Wayne County Well Survey of Fairfield owns the device. IEMA officials say the firm faces a fine of up to $10,000 a day until the device is found. The search area includes 16 counties in Southern Illinois and two in Indiana.
23-year-old Jason D. Burger of McLeansboro was arrested Thursday on a charge of DUI. Police pulled Burger’s vehicle over on Ill. Rt. 15 at County Road 320 E. early Thursday morning.
On Thursday at noon, the Fairfield Rotary Club had David Daugherty, President and CEO of the Baker Group, as their guest speaker. The Baker Group is one of the largest independently owned Broker/Dealers in the United States and works primarily with financial institutions in the implementation of investment and asset/liability strategies. Daugherty spoke on the history of the Federal Reserve and the impact they had on the financial crises of 1929, 1987, 2001, and 2008. He also discussed the state of the current economy and how the Fed is responding.

92 year-year-old Donna Pauline Grandon died at 11:07 pm on Thursday, October 22. She was a housewife and worked at the International Shoe Factory at Flora, IL. She attended the Shiloh Church of Christ in Louisville and was a former member of Ladies Auxiliary at Clay County Hospital in Flora.

Edwards County State’s Attorney Michael Valentine says that Powell’s charge was elevated from a misdemeanor to a felony based upon a previous domestic battery conviction in White County. In addition to 5 ½ years prison, Powell will have to serve another four years of parole and has been ordered to pay $652 in various fines, fees and court costs. As part of the plea agreement to an extended term in prison, the state dropped a class-2 felony charge of aggravated domestic battery, a class-3 felony charge of intimidation and a class-4 felony charge of intimidation.
Rachel Knasinski, the former West Salem bank employee who embezzled more than $350,000 has reported to a federal prison in Kentucky to begin serving her two year sentence. She was sentenced for the crime last month in U.S. District Court at Benton. According to court records, Knasinski stole the money from the First State Bank in West Salem between November of 2011 and January of this year.
At this month’s meeting of the Illinois Eastern Community College Board of Trustees, members approved the retirement of Karen Bryant as coordinator of Public Information and Marketing at Frontier Community College. The board also approved the retirement of Scott Talbert, Textbook and Equipment Library Technician at Frontier, and Mitchell Wolfe, Workforce Education Instructor. All of those retirements will be effective January 1 of 2016.

89 year old William H “Jill” Dial of McLeansboro died Saturday at Heritage Woods Assisted Living Facility in McLeansboro. He was an oilfield worker and farmer and also served in the US Navy during World War 2 on LST 908.
He is survived by his wife Lorene, of McLeansboro and several nieces and nephews.

Teams from the Illinois Emergency Management Agency continue their 2 state search for a missing steel canister containing radioactive material. Wayne County Well Servicing Inc. reported the device missing a week ago. The radioactive well logging source holder is silver in color 12 inches high, 14 inches in diameter and weighs 75 lbs. Anyone who finds the locked steel canister should contact their local authorities.
Work will begin Monday to replace a bridge on North Wynoose Road, between Woods Lane and Bethel Lane. This section of the Wynoose road will be closed to traffic during the construction, which is expected to last 10 weeks.
Ronnie Dale McNeely, age 68, of Louisville, IL, died at 10:23 pm, Friday, October 23, 2015, at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO. He was self- employed as an over-the-road truck driver and was a member of the Louisville Christian Church.

A McLeansboro High School student died Sunday morning in a single-vehicle crash in Franklin County. 17-year-old Isaiah Snowden was pronounced dead at 1:55 Sunday morning by the Franklin County coroner Marty Leffler. Leffler said Snowden was a back seat passenger in a pickup truck that ran a stop sign on the Aden Blacktop at Bessie road. The truck ran through a yard, hit a tree, and then traveled through a house before coming to rest on its top. The driver and two other passengers were seriously injured in the crash. Coroner Leffler said alcohol was a factor in the crash, along with excessive speed. Snowden was pronounced dead at the scene from major blunt force trauma injuries. Funeral services for Isaiah Snowden are pending at the Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro.
44-year-old Amy L. Long of Carmi was arrested Sunday for aggravated domestic battery – a class-2 felony. She is accused of battering her mother, 73-year-old Patsy L. Long. The victim told police that “things had been very intense around their house the past few weeks because the Chicago Cubs’ failure in the post season.”
Frontier Community College has been given approval to build a field for the Bobcats Baseball Program. The field will be built along Ill. Rt. 15 between Classroom Building West and Five Brothers Restaurant.
The North Wayne School Board has approved the establishment of a Pee Wee basketball program for kids 2 – 4. Alex Atwood and Kevin Bowen will be the volunteer coaches.
John C. Gabbard, 48 of Wayne City was arrested early Sunday morning for DUI, trespass and battery. He is accused of punching 26-year-old Tim Smith of Keenes after a wedding reception.
30-year-old Zachary K. Day of Cisne was arrested Friday for domestic battery. He is accused of punching his wife, 28-year-old Misty Day during an altercation.
The price of gasoline in parts of Southern Illinois has dropped to below $2 a gallon. In Coulterville, the price has dropped to $1.87 a gallon. In Christoper, the price is $1.89 per gallon. Prices in Fairfield are holding at around $2.13 a gallon.

17-year-old Opdyke, Ill. resident, Isaiah Makail Snowden died at 1:55 a.m. Sunday in Franklin County as the result of injuries sustained in a traffic accident. He was a student in his Senior year Hamilton County Unit #10 High School in Mcleansboro and a member of the Army National Guard.
He is survived by his parents Jessie and Joyce Scott of Opdyke, IL; a brother Nathaniel Younger of Opdyke; a sister Makalia Younger of Opdyke; paternal grandmother Sheery Evilsizer (and companion Don Fry) of Flora; maternal grandparents John and Judy Phillips of Duquoin; aunts Johnny Younger of Valier, IL, Jessica Phillips of Royalton, IL, Judy Scott of Womack, IL, Amanda Roberts of Alabama and Leigh Ann Blackburn of West Frankfort, IL; uncles Patrick Evilsizer of Flora, John Evilsizer (currently stationed in Hawaii in the US Marine Corps) and Curt Scott of Centralia; an uncle and aunt Fred & Debbie Harlow; and uncle and aunt Billy & Corrine Ullery; godparents John (Papaw) and Darlene (Mammy) Roberts of Mcleansboro; and extended family members Danny, Veronica and Daniel of Benton, IL.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 28, 2015 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the General Baptist Church in Mcleansboro. A graveside funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 29th at 12:00 noon at the Old Duquoin Cemetery in Old Duquoin, IL with Rev. Jason Moore officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Army National Guard at the cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Hamilton County High School Football Team or to the family to help with funeral expenses and will be accepted at the church or at the Gholson Funeral Home in Mcleansboro, which is in charge of the arrangements.
A 17-year-old boy has been jailed on connection with an early Sunday morning crash that claimed the life of McLeansboro High School student Isaiah Snowden (pictured left). The suspect, not named because of his age, is being held in the Franklin County Juvenile Detention Center on DUI-related charges. Snowden died when the pickup truck he was a passenger in ran through a stop intersection, hit a tree, ran through a mobile home and overturned. The accident happened in the early morning hours Sunday. Alcohol and excessive speed were factors in the crash. Visitation for Isaiah Snowden will be 5 – 8 Wednesday evening at the General Baptist Church in McLeansboro.
21-year-old Jacob Holland of Carmi has been sentenced to eight years in prison after pleading guilty to charges related to a stabbing incident last August at Bradshaw Park in Carmi. Holland was sentenced after pleading guilty to two felony counts of Aggravated Battery.
Frontier Community College has been given approval to build a field for the Bobcats Baseball program. The field will be built along Ill. Rt. 15 between Classroom Building West and the Five Brothers Restaurant. Jeff Baker will be the Bobcat’s head baseball coach.
The North Wayne School Board has approved the establishment of a Pee Wee basketball program for kids in grades 2 – 4. Kevin Bowen and Alex Atwood will be the volunteer coaches.
44-year-old Amy L. Long of Carmi has been arrested on a felony charge of aggravated domestic battery. She is accused of battering her 73-year-old mother, Patsy L. Long. Police reports indicate the incident stemmed from Amy Long’s growing despair over the Chicago Cubs’ failure in the post season.
Luana Marie Edge, 69 passed from this life to the next October 21, 2015 in Perris, CA.
Luana was born May 4, 1946 in San Francisco, CA. She married Steve Edge August 22, 1999 at Tower Hill Plantation, SC. She was a manager in a restaurant.
She is survived by her husband Steve of San Jacinto, CA, 2 daughters, 1 brother and 3 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and 2 brothers.
Funeral service will be held Friday, October 30, 2015 at Ingram Funeral Home in Albion, IL at 1:00pm.
Visitation will be held at 12:30 pm until time of service at the Ingram Funeral Home in Albion, IL. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery southwest of Albion, IL.
