Some Illinois lawmakers want to know why the deer harvest numbers for the state’s latest deer hunting season was so much lower than previous years and whether action is needed to increase the deer population. State Representative Jerry Costello said members of the Legislature’s downstate caucus met with Department of Natural Resources managers to discuss the issue. The 2013-2014 deer harvest amounted to just over 148,000 compared to nearly 181,000 the previous season. Costello said the DNR told lawmakers that the state may have overshot an earlier management goal for bringing down deer numbers due to overpopulation. Biologists say season regulations and permit quotas can be adjusted to allow deer population growth in 41 Illinois counties, including Marion and Jefferson counties.
