Eastern Gulf Crude Access, LLC, based in Houston, TX, plans to construct a new 40 mile long crude oil pipeline from a massive storage facility near Patoka, IL to a point in northern Wayne County. The overall project involves converting about 574 miles of various segments of Trunkline Gas Company’s existing 30-inch pipeline between Illinois and Louisiana from natural gas production to a crude oil transportation service. As part of that project, Eastern Gulf plans to build about 40 miles of new 30-inch pipeline from the Patoka hub to a point in Wayne County near Johnsonville. The Johnsonville site is at the heart of a proposed oil field in which one exploratory well utilizing a horizontal drilling technique has already been drilled. The estimated cost of the Illinois project is up to $250 million, and Eastern Gulf officials say up to 800 workers could be employed during the project.
Two people died Friday night in an accident on Illinois Route 15 at North Woodlawn Lane in Jefferson County which involved a pickup truck and a motorcycle. State police at the DuQuoin post have not identified those involved in the crash, but said that a 40-year-old male from Woodlawn was driving a pickup eastbound on Illinois Route 15 and turned into the path of a motorcycle operated by a 52-year-old male from Vandalia, IL. The operator of the motorcycle and a 49-year-old female passenger from Mt. Vernon, IL died in the crash. The driver of the pickup was taken to St. Louis University Hospital for treatment. The investigation is continuing.
Heavy rainfall moved through parts of southern Illinois Saturday afternoon. Here at the studios of WFIW/WOKZ, just 18 hundreths of an inch of rain was recorded, however heavier rainfall amounts were reported to our north in parts of Clay and Richland counties. The National Weather Service issued Flash Flood Warnings for several counties to our north late Saturday afternoon after a complex of thunderstorms dropped up to two to three inches of rain in many areas. The area has a daily chance of more popup showers and thunderstorms for most of this week.
$30,175 was raised at this year’s Wayne County Relay For Life, held at Leo French Park in Fairfield. Last year’s event raised a total of $48,843. Friday’s event opened late Friday afternoon and wrapped up early Saturday morning, and included the survivor’s lap and the Luminaria ceremony around the Leo French Park lake.
The Fairfield City Council meets Tuesday night with a full agenda on tap. The council is expected to discuss a plan to allow utility customers to pay their bill electronically, as well as an automatic deposit of payroll for city employees, and a change to the city’s Municipal Telecommunications Tax Rate. Tuesday’s meeting gets underway at 6 p.m.
