Bob Boyles, Dean of Instruction at Frontier Community College, has announced his retirement effective this month with over 30 years of service to the Illinois Eastern Community Colleges District. Boyles started his career at Frontier Community College on April 1, 1981, as the Director of Financial Aid & Veterans Affairs. In 1983 Boyles was promoted to Dean of Institutional Advancement with the added responsibilities for overseeing the operations and maintenance on a growing campus. In this role, he worked closely with the Frontier Community College Foundation. After some restructuring in 1986, his title was changed to Director of Adult and Continuing Education and added the supervision of the Adult Education Program to his responsibilities.
A Fairview Heights, Ill. man accused of trying to disarm an Illinois State Trooper during a traffic stop last September has been deemed unfit to stand trial. Cedric R. Moore, 27, faces formal charges of attempted first-degree murder, attempting to disarm a police officer and aggravated battery of a police officer. Last week, Moore was transported to the mental health facility of the Menard State Prison at Chester, Ill. where he remain until he is deemed fit to stand trial. Following a psychiatric exam, a judge ruled Moore unfit to stand trial. He is scheduled to be back in Wayne County Circuit Court on January 16 to re-examine his fitness.
Another shot of snow is in the forecast for this evening. A fast moving weather system could bring another inch or so of snow this evening into Tuesday morning. Fairfield picked up 13 inches of snow Friday and a layer of freezing rain Sunday night. Secondary roads remain snow covered, slick and hazardous.
The 6th Annual “Christmas Uptown” on Market Street in Mount Carmel has been rescheduled for Friday evening, Dec. 20. The event had to be delayed because of Friday’s snow storm.
The Fairfield Beautification Committee’s Christmas Light Tour for senior Citizens is still on tap for next Monday, Dec. 16. Pickup points are Brookstone Estates, Fair-Way Apartments, Fairfield High-Rise, Village Apartments and City Hall. Refreshments and entertainment by the Roasted Chestnuts will follow the tour at City Hall.
The second installment of Wayne County Real Estate Taxes will be due today. Certified letters will go out to delinquent taxpayers on Dec. 20 with the delinquent taxpayer list being published in the local paper on Jan. 6.
The Illinois Department of Human Services is offering special Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP benefits to residents in area counties declared federal disaster areas as a result of the tornadoes and severe storms last month. Locally, Wayne and Wabash Counties are included. More information is available on the IDHS website.
