71-year-old Thomas McCord of rural Crossville died Tuesday night after a tornado tore through rural Crossville. McCord had sought shelter in an out-building that was destroyed by the twister. His wife was injured and taken to an area hospital. White County officials said the tornado left a path of destruction four to five miles long. Several homes, farm structures, grain bins and oilfield tanks were demolished by the storm. Most of the damage occurred south and east of Crossville.
Tuesday’s tornado came on the five-year anniversary of the deadly tornado that swept through Harrisburg, destroying dozens of homes and businesses and leaving eight people dead.
Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is warning residents impacted by this week’s severe weather to be on the alert for scammers looking to exploit homeowners and business owners who may be in need of repairs from storm-related damage. Madigan suggests residents make sure contractors and insurance adjusters are properly licensed. Dealing with local contractors is strongly suggested.
29-year-old Edwin T. Steinborn, Jr. of Fairfield has been arrested on charges of obstructing police, obstructing his identification and possession of a controlled substance. Steinborn allegedly had some prescription drugs on his person as he was being booked at the county jail.
The Wayne City High School History club raised over $1,000 during a recent trivia night event. Money raised will go towards the purchase of new computers and expenses related to a spring trip to Louisville, Ky. Over 50 door prizes were donated by area businesses. Ten teams participated.
