The Darmstadt, Indiana woman shot to death Monday morning is a native of Grayville. Sherry Loehrlein, 52 is the former Sherry McCarty of Grayville. According to officials with the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Department, Mrs. Loehrlein was attacked by her husband, Clint at the family’s home a little after 7 o’clock Monday morning. Officials with the Vanderburgh County Coroner’s office said the victim died of a gunshot wound to her upper back. The Loehrlein’s twin daughters, Cynthia and Nicole Loehrlein were also injured in the attack. Cynthia was shot multiple times and was stabbed. Nicole was shot in the arm and suffered non-life threatening injuries. Clint Loehrlein, an Evansville construction company executive, was hospitalized after he allegedly stabbed himself at deputies responded to the crime scene. Charges against Clint Loehrlein are pending.
40-year-old Charla Beth Sullivan of Carmi has been sentenced to four years in prison for her role in the August, 2016 burglary of the Donna Matz home in Carmi. Sullivan and co-defendant Mark Keller took jewelry stolen from the Matz home and pawned it, investigators said. Keller was previously sentenced to 17 years in prison for his role in the heist. A third defendant, Michael Bassemier will be sentenced next Monday. The burglary happened while Donna Matz was attending the funeral of her husband.
The Edwards County Sheriff’s Department is accepting applications for the position of Deputy Sheriff to update their eligibility hiring list. Application packets can be picked up in the Sheriff’s office in Albion.
The U.S. Supreme Court will not hear an appeal challenging Illinois’ system for issuing permits for people to carry concealed weapons in public. Three men sued state officials after they said a state review board denied their permit requests without offering an adequate explanation.
A new report shows that roughly 3,000 gambling terminals opened in Illinois last year, generating growing profits for some communities. There are currently four establishments in Fairfield with video gaming terminals. A total of 18 machines are up and running in Fairfield.
Illinois lawmakers are considering a proposal to tax sugary drinks. Senate Bill 9 would tax any drink that has five grams of sugar or more. The tax, if imposed, would bring in about $560 million a year for the state.
