BRUCE, PRAXTON D38-year-old Paxton D. Bruce of rural Wayne City has been jailed on charges he slashed two people with a knife and battered two others during an altercation early Sunday morning southwest of Keenes. Bruce is accused of slashing Daniel Stevenson of rural Belle Rive and slicing a finger on Stevenson’s wife Jessica.  Bruce is also accused of battering his sister, Peggy Rightenower and 24-year-old Cole Tatum of Wayne City. Bruce faces preliminary charges of attempted murder, four counts of aggravated battery and two counts of aggravated domestic battery.  He remains in the Wayne County jail pending the filing of charges and setting of bond.

Fairfield set a new record high temperature for Saturday, January 21 and tied the record for Sunday, January 22. On Saturday, the mercury rose to 73, breaking the old record high for the date of 68 set in 1986. On Sunday, we recorded a high of 65, tying the old record of 65 set in 1964.

The Fairfield Community High School Junior Varsity Scholastic team captured third place in the Cumberland Pirates JV Tournament Saturday.  Lex Gonzales was named to the all-tournament team for being in the top 8 during the morning rounds.

Illinois State Police are warning residents of a phone scam going around. Residents have been receiving calls that they are under criminal investigation and need to send $600 to avoid prosecution.  The scammers have been able to use a phone number that comes up on caller ID as being from the State Police. State police officials never solicit money on behalf of the department. If you receive one of these calls – hang up.

The Fairfield City Council meets Tuesday night with a light agenda.  Officials will discuss installing video surveillance cameras in the collector’s office.
