Former Wayne County Jail Correctional Officer Cynthia Steiner has filed a federal lawsuit against Sheriff Mike Everett and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department. Steiner alleges sexual discrimination, sexual harassment, age discrimination, disability discrimination and retaliatory discharge. The suit was filed this week in U.S. District Court at Benton.
45-year-old Shad Weller of Xenia was injured Thursday in a single-vehicle crash on old U.S. Rt. 50 in Clay County. Weller ran off the road and hit a utility pole. He was cited for drunk driving, not wearing a seatbelt and operating an uninsured vehicle.
Illinois State Police report only three people died in traffic crashes during the five-day travel period around Thanksgiving. That’s a sharp drop from last year when 17 motorists died on Illinois roads during the holiday period. State Police handled a total of 381 crashes during the holiday period.
The Edwards County High School JV Scholastic Bowl took first place at the Southern Illinois Academic Conference tournament in Fairfield Thursday night. The team is coached by Will Swardstrom. The Fairfield Community High School team went 1 and 4 in the meet, moving to 8 and 7 on the season.
The Fairfield Kiwanis Club Lighted Christmas Parade is Saturday night. The parade is set to begin at 5 p.m. Following the parade, Santa will be in his house at Leo French Park until around 8 p.m. The Festival of Lights display at Leo French Park opens officially tonight.
