22-year-old Christopher R. Cleveland of West Salem has entered a plea to charges he battered a 4 ½-month-old family member, causing the child to suffer broken ribs. By entering an “Alford Plea”, Cleveland did not admit to the crime, but did admit that there was a strong probability that a jury would find him guilty. Sentencing has been set for August 28. He faces up to 5 years in prison. Illinois State Police detectives investigated the case.
The Fairfield City Council has approved a new ordinance that will restrict parking around Fairfield Community High School. The ordinance was drawn up after school officials expressed concerns about student safety because of traffic congestion in the area.
At the Edwards County Fair Tuesday evening, Delbert and Lois Seals of West Salem were crowned the Senior King and Queen. Today, a Tractor Rodeo will be held at 1 p.m. The kids pedal pull will be at 5:30 this evening with pig wrestling at 7.
Fairfield native, Dr. Jerry Quindry has been employed by the city to oversee the completion of mitigation work on the city’s failed side channel reservoir. Quindry will be working closely with the U.S. Corps of Engineers in completing the project.
7-year-old Brandon Best of rural Fairfield was seriously injured Monday evening when a dog bit his face. The son of Brandy Best, the child was taken to Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis. Animal Control officials have taken custody of the dog.
