Dangerously cold wind chill values will develop today with values falling below zero across the area by mid to late morning. By mid-afternoon, wind chill values will drop to ten below zero. In addition, Thursday morning low temperatures will fall to near zero.

An employee at Fairfield’s Super Wal-Mart was arrested Tuesday afternoon on a preliminary charge of theft. 23-year-old Niancka N. Brown of Fairfield is accused of stealing money out of a cash drawer. She was booked at the Wayne County jail Tuesday afternoon on a preliminary charge of theft under $500. Officials said the alleged theft was caught on security cameras.

A benefit dinner for Gary Griffith has been set for Sunday, January 18 at the Wayne County Fairgrounds in Fairfield. Gary has spent more than three months in a St. Louis Hospital after receiving a double lung transplant. The benefit dinner will feature chicken, BBQ and all the trimmings. Serving will begin at 11 a.m.

Southern Illinois residents should be aware of another scam in our area. The latest involves Ameren. Someone is calling customers and threatening to shut off their electricity if they don’t send money. Ameren officials say they never call customers and demand payment over the phone.

State officials say they are open to expanding the list of diseases that can be treated with medical marijuana. Right now, there are about 36 approved conditions on the list, including cancer, HIV and certain seizure disorders. Some states allow people with migraines, PTSD and insomnia to use medical marijuana to relieve their symptoms. State officials are taking suggestions through February on whether to add similar conditions to the list of conditions in Illinois.
