83-year-old Ridgway resident, Richard L. Maloney, died on December 31, 2014 at the Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. He was a lifelong farmer, who obtained his bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois and joined the Air Force ROTC. He also served in the Korean War as an airplane pilot. He was a Gallatin County Board Member for over 20 years, served on the Ridgway School Board, Shawnee FBFM Board and was a trustee at St. Patrick’s Church for many years. He was also an adviser to 4H.
Survivors are his wife, Alice (Naas) Maloney of Ridgway; two sons: Kevin (Kay) Maloney of Norris City, Illinois, Michael (Tonya) Maloney of Ridgway; three daughters: Julie (Sonny) Shearer of Norris City, Illinois, Maria Spahr of Ridgway, and Angela (Mike) Knight of Pawnee, Illinois. 19 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren; One brother: David (Frances) Maloney of Waverly, Kentucky; three sisters: Mary Beth (Charles) Wargel of Equality, Illinois, Corrine (Ted) Miller of Reston, Virginia and Francis (Tony) Traweek of Tyler, Texas; Special caregivers: Stella Feazel and Mary Jo Redick.
Funeral mass services for Richard L. Maloney will be Saturday, January 3, 2015 at the St. Patrick’s Chapel of St. Kateri Catholic Church in the Pond Settlement community east of Ridgway starting at 10:30 AM. Visitation will be on Friday, January 2, 2015 (tonight) from 4 PM to 8 PM at the Cox & Son Funeral Home in Ridgway where a prayer service will start at 4 PM.
In leiu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Kateri Building Fund, or the Hospice of Southern Illinois, or the Wabash Christian Retirement Center. You may also leave a note of comfort to the family at www.coxandson.com.
